Atticus’s and his courage “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway” - John Wayne.
In to kill a mocking bird, courage is seen all through the book. Many characters throughout the book have shown great courage. However, we discover that Atticus is an outlier through his personality, actions, and words.
First of all, Atticus finch. (Maycomb county’s lawyer) takes on a rape case. In chapter 9, page 99,
We find out that a young black man named Tom Robinson is accused of raping a young woman named Mayella. Atticus states that even though he's being licked, (Because of Maycombs' racism) there's no reason not to try and win. This goes to shows a lot of courage trying to save a black man in Maycomb county. Not to mention, the racists that are filled in Maycomb county, and the hatred for the black overrides the love for them. Hence the bravery of Atticus (a white man) sticking up for a black guy takes a lot of nerve. Not to mention, Atticus is seen in chapter 15 staying outside Tom’s cell to prevent lynchers. He wants to be in his way not what society refers to as “ Normal” or “Proper”. For example, We see in chapter 13, Aunt Alexandra says that Scout needs to be a “ Proper “ lady. Atticus finally takes his sister’s words but when he sees that leaves Scout in tears he notices that that's not who he is. He tells Scout to forget everything he said. He doesn't want his kids to be in the social norm, he wants them to have their own beliefs and rights. Another reason why Atticus is going against society is that he has a black cooking lady named Calpernea. Courage is not the absence of fear. courageous people feel fear most of the time but manage to overcome that anxiety and replace it with bravery no matter the cost, they take and dominate them. The Courage of Atticus There are many characters in the book ‘’To kill a Mockingbird'’ by Harper Lee who are considered brave. I think there are many, but I think the bravest character of them all is Atticus Finch. Out of all the characters he goes through alot in his life. The way the book ‘’To Kill a Mockingbird’’ explains courage as doing the right thing no matter how hard it may be. I believe Atticus Finch does that more than any other character.

Atticus, a lawyer, faces the difficult task of defending Tom Robinson, a black male, against the accusations of rape. Judge Taylor asks Atticus to defend Tom and he accepts, knowing that his decision will cause chaos around him. Tom Robinson deserves a defense under the law and Atticus knows he is the best or only person to provide that defense. Scout asks Atticus why he took the case if some believe he shouldn’t, and he responds by saying, “if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my own head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 86). Atticus, aware of the racial tension and disapproval in Maycomb’s white community, chooses to do the right thing.
In this novel, there are some parts that show racism. Atticus is the best lawyer in Maycomb. In chapter 9, he started to defends Tom Robinson. All the people in Maycomb disagree about defending Tom, Negro men. However, he believes Tom Robinson and Atticus work hard to defend him.

According to Atticus, this is the ability to face adversity and go through with something honourable, even though you realize that it is impossible to win. There are quite a few characters in the book, which show some kind of courage, but there is one in particular, Atticus. Harper Lee made Atticus the hero of moral and a symbol of courage in her novel. He is the figurehead for all three kinds of courage I mentioned. For one he confronts a rabid dog, which displays physical courage.
Though most of the town Maycomb feels negatively and discriminates the African-Americans, characters like Atticus show us how one person can impact his surroundings if he has high morals. Although he couldn’t change the mindset of the other town residents , he made sure that his own children didn’t discriminate people, purely on the basis of their skin colour. Racism can be seen even in the first few chapters of the book. These racist comments by nonracist children typify the culture in which they were growing up.
