Josh Ladrigan Professor Gibson Intermediate Composition 6 February 2023 Sales Associates in the GFS Community Discourse communities can be found wherever you go, and many people are involved with a variety of communities. People may be involved in these communities through their profession, interests, or hobbies. These communities can be any group that uses a variation of communication to reach certain goals. The true definition of a discourse community is a group that has objectives or purposes, and utilizes communication to accomplish those objectives. The discourse community I am going to discuss is the community within my workplace, Gordon Food Service (GFS). It is a retail grocery store, with a small team of 18 people. We all work together …show more content…
The main goal of GFS is to serve our customers with the highest quality foodservice products and services. This is a goal that the entire company abides by and works every day to achieve. At my specific location, our main goal is to work quickly and proficiently, while maintaining quality customer service. We accomplish our goal each day by coming to work prepared, always having a body on the floor, communicating with our team members, talking to our customers, and having constant encouragement throughout the shift. The main goal for the associates is to work as a team and support each other whenever help is needed. Each day, we work together to achieve our goals and work to end each night …show more content…
In order to become a member of the GFS sales associate team, one must get hired first. This requires completing an application, sitting through an interview, and submitting all paperwork required by the company. Once hired, a new member is paired with an existing member. This existing member must be highly knowledgeable with the entire store and be able to pass information down to the new hire. Being considered highly knowledgeable means one can work the computer, stock efficiently, run the cash register, understand the inventory system, etc. The chain of power within GFS is corporate, manager, assistant managers, long term employees, and new hires. Ways to leave this discourse community is giving your two weeks notice, quitting on the spot, or getting fired by a manager or
A discourse community has yet to have a solid definition; though some have come close. One of the people who have attempted to define discourse community is John Swales. Swales, rather than use a standard definition, chose to create a set list of criteria. With the help of the criteria and my interview of Dane (a member of my chosen discourse community) I will discuss how my chosen group, Communications 101, is a discourse community. Communications 101 (Comm. 101) is a college credit class that helps the students in the class learn the “fundamental principles of verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual communication with an introduction to relational and organizational communication, public communication, and media studies.
Any group of individuals who share a common goal, and who communicate distinctly in efforts to achieve their goal can be referred to as a discourse community. There are certain features that distinguish a discourse community from any other society. In the article, The Concept of a Discourse Community, John Swales identifies a discourse community by six different characteristics that not only describe a discourse community; he also illustrates the process of joining that specific community. In the article Identity, Authority, and Learning to Write in New Work Places, Elizabeth Wardle discusses the engagement process of newcomers into a discourse community. According to Patricia Bizzell, the term discourse community suggests “a community bound
For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.
This accomplishment reflects a collaborative effort that
Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and author, once stated, “The well-being of a community of people working together will be the greater, the less the individual claims for himself the proceeds of his work, the more of these proceeds he makes over to his fellow-workers, the more his own needs are satisfied, not out of his own work but out of the work done by others” (“Recording of Society”). This quote represents the true meaning of a discourse community. A discourse community is a group of social individuals that work together to reach a common goal, understand the same basic values and assumptions, and use a unique kind of communication to reach their set goal or purpose. A good example of a discourse community is the organization
The Overlapping Science Education Community Introduction An important part of my life has always been my desire to help others. This was the reason I chose to major in Education, more specifically Science Education. I wanted to be able to give students the opportunity to learn and assist them in their academic journey. The community of educators is an example of a discourse community.
As a Sacramento State college student, I have observed that every student belongs to different discourse communities. Every student becomes part of an academic discourse community when declaring a major or minor. Gary D. Schmidt and William J. Vande Kopple define academic discourse community as “a group of people who share ways to claim [understand], organize, communicate, and evaluate meanings.” The academic discourse communities that I belong to will help me in the future to have experience working with others. Being part of the Sacramento State community, I have perceived that I belong to two academic discourse communities that have impacted my life in significant ways.

“With great power comes great responsibility” (Parker, 1962), Being anointed the new district manager of five Dunkin Donut locations and a few of those starting fresh within current geographical location, myself along with my co-workers/teammates will have to stay sharp to meet but also exceed current and future standards/expectations. A successful district manager has to do far more than just purchasing or renting a new establishment(s), employing some help and purchasing all of the needed supplies in order to have a functioning, healthy business. Even when making a comparison to my previous position as a store manager, while things will be similar there is a lot more added responsibility with my current venture. I will be responsible for
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
He characterizes discourse community has "a group of people obliged by a standard interest who corresponds through acknowledged means and whose discussion is controlled" (Porter 1986 p. 400). An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
You are either in it or you’re not.” (Gee 487). Swales and Gee obviously agree on the idea of communication but surprisingly, Porter does too. Porter writes that, “A “discourse community” is a group of individuals bound by a common interest who communicate through approved channels…” (porter 400) All three of these journalist agree that communication is vital to a discourse
