Do the concepts of good and evil exist? Many people would say yes. In late 17th-century Salem, Massachusetts, these concepts were truly put to the test. In the Puritan culture that was descended from the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620, the people of New England were expected to live a life that was strictly devoted to Biblical dictates and ideals. Unfortunately, the Puritan mindset of the time period evolved in such a way that a belief in the possibility of the devil's interference in people's lives, in evil spirits, witches and warlocks, became a part of everyday life. As a result, the historical period that we know of as the Salem witch trials took place, where many innocent people were hanged for being suspected of practicing evil. There are several characters in The Crucible who can be seen as practicing evil. Those characters are Abigail Williams, Mary Warren, and Judge Danforth. …show more content…
In the play the Crucible she was the head of the accusers. She and her group accused many townspeople of witchcraft leading to almost all of their impending deaths and a mass hysteria. Even if she herself did not accuse the victims she stood in trial as a witness and lied about many incidents. Her rampage started with a man known as John Proctor. John Proctor was Abigail's lover, even though he was a married man. When she asked him to divorce his wife so they could be together he refused, this was a major stepping point for Abby. Abby is evil although she isn't a witch because she is setting people up to be killed. “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” Here we see Abby looking after only herself while threatening those who dare to go against her. This proves she will go to any lengths to keep herself safe and the evil that she is

The Crucible by “Arthur Miller” is a retelling of the Salem Witch Trials which took place in the 1690s. During these times women were not given much of a say in the community, and only land owning men of the puritan faith were allowed to participate in government. Abigale Williams, a poor adopted woman knew this better than anyone in the town of Salem. Abigale has witnessed some very troublesome moments in her life that has allowed her to pick up a manipulative, conniving personality. So when she is given an opportunity to have a say in court through the Salem Witch Trials she is determined to take full advantage of it.
If turmoil comes over your town, would you take advantage of it? The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a shocking novel about witchcraft in Salem in the late 1600s. Many girls, including Abigail, were caught in the woods doing what was thought to be “witchcraft”. Once the rest of the town hears of this the accusations start. With little evidence to prove innocence, confessing or hanging were the only options.
Poor Behavior in “The Crucible” Ever wonder why people dies in The Crucible? The impact of Poor Behavior is exhibited throughout The Crucible. Most of the characters act badly.
Throughout the entire play of the Crucible, Abigail Williams portrayed the characteristic of a selfish teenager whose actions were only to help herself. She accused many innocent people of committing the crime of witchcraft, which nineteen were later hung. Her entire motive was to get revenge on Elizabeth Proctor so she could have Elizabeth’s husband, John Proctor, all to herself. “She blacken my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!
Society today is really judgemental. If you don’t wear the right clothes or have the right car then you will get judged. It’s kinda like in the book The Crucible if you weren't a puritan then you were an outcast or you might have been a witch. One of the puritan girls Abigail Williams blamed a lot of women who were called puritans and lived the puritan way. In this case people just judged them without looking into far more research.
Back in the late sixteen hundreds the people during that time are very strict on religion. During the time a colony in the Americas called the puritans believed in witchcraft. People that are accused are guilty till proven innocent. In the Crucible it portrays injustice by how Danforth is not following court that is ruled by religion, Abigail intimidating the court, and the accused not having proper court rights. The following reasons will explain why the crucible is injustice.
“Inside each of us there is the seed of both good and evil. It’s a constant struggle as to which one will win. And on cannot exist without the other”. (Eric Burdon) In Miller’s play The Crucible Abigail and Elizabeth both had to choose between good and evil.
Through the Salem witch trials, twenty-four innocent people lost their lives due to betrayal. They were hung because they were accused and found to be guilty of witchcraft. In reality, everyone that was accused and had died were innocent, but used as targets by others to save their own lives. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, out of fear, Abigail Williams, Mary Warren, Mercy Lewis, and Reverend Hale betrayed their morals to save themselves. As a result of betrayal, lives were taken, relationships were ruined, and trusts were broken.
Hypocrisy is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. In the book the Crucible there are many hypocrites some dishonest some just following any one to be guilty, but one of the many character is Judge Danforth he mocks Marry when he ask "How were you instructed in your life? Do you not know that God damns all liars?"(3-84), since Danforth is in power for being the judge he thinks that everyone else is ignorant and not being equal as him.
A question that’s been asked throughout the ages; are people good, evil or are they just misguided. The play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600’s, early 1700’s, where countless innocent people lost their lives due to false accusations of being a witch. During this time in the provincial town of Salem, Massachusetts, the mass hysteria over witchcraft had everyone in the small puritan town turning on one another. Their religious beliefs and intolerance during this time lead the puritans to extreme decisions about their neighbors. If one were to give into desires of any kind that did not follow the strict limitations of their religious faith, they were considered to be “evil”; they were doing the Devil’s work.
Abigail was very cruel, she basically forced her friends to be a part of the big lie she was making up about the witches. She threatened to murder them if they said anything. In her attempts to get with John Proctor she eventually failed, but a while after she still wanted to be with him and even accused John’s wife for witchcraft. When her friend Mary Warren attempted to tell the truth, Abigail started acting like Mary was a witch.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare and The Crucible by Arthur Miller share a common theme in that when humans attempt to pursue their ambitions they become easily corruptible. What is ambition? Google defines ambition as a strong desire to do or achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. The idea that human ambition is easily corruptible is true both in 11th century Scotland, in 16th century Salem and in the 21st century that we live in today. Ambition drives us to do things outside of the social norm.
People have a tendency to fight for themselves and for what they believe in no matter what the cost. This is shown in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible when people in a village, named Salem, try kill their neighbors by blaming them for witchcraft. With characters such as John Proctor, he tries to bring justice to the town of Salem with all the false accusations with Reverend Hale. However with Judge Hawthorne, Abigail, Parris, Putnam, and the townspeople standing in their way, Proctor and Hale must fight through to bring justice. However in the end, 20 innocent people died because of people’s vengeance, hatred, and greed.
