You start out with Santiago talking about how he was telling his stories to the Merchants daughter “He went on telling stories about his travels, and her bright, Moorish eyes went wide with fear and surprise.”(p.6) this young lady had fear from just the stories that Santiago was telling. She did not fear because it was insanely scary but because it was different. A little later in the book there is more fear when Santiago is talking to The Crystal Merchant.
