Mr. Wilson works on cars and makes an average wage for the period. This causes marital problems as he cannot offer Myrtle the dream life she wants to live. While Tom does not work at all and inherited a considerable amount of riches. Tom’s riches are the reason Daisy stays around because he was an acceptable man after Gatsby left for the army. Myrtle once states “I married him because I thought he was a gentleman. I thought he knew something about breeding but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe” (Fitzgerald 39). The statement produced by Myrtle shows how she feels about her husband Wilson. Even though he works his life to make her happy, she chooses to go off and sleep with Tom. Tom was given all his money and never worked for it, but George’s wife was centered around having the expensive things in life. Tom speaks to Gatsby and says “...Daisy loved me when she married me and she loves me now” (Fitzgerald 138). Tom uses this statement to describe to Gatsby how Daisy had always loved him. While Daisy was cheating with Gatsby she went off and chose Tom because that is what was right based on his riches, and was the reason she originally chose him over the less wealthy Gatsby, when he left for the service. Besides the fact that the men receive their incomes in alternative ways, Tom managed to retain his wife, unlike Mr. Wilson. But, both men tend to run away from
Tom had everything Gatsby and Wilson were lacking, a silver spoon fed youth and a quality education, a guaranteed good life for women. Daisy turned blind eye towards Tom's affairs, while Myrtle ignored his tempestuous physical abuse, highlighting women's rights and status during the 20s. Women preferred educated and rich man for their husbands, because they had no other way to make their livings. An educated man was not Gatsby nor Wilson, only George was more forward with it. Gatsby tried to delude people into thinking that he was a wealthy orphan from the West, went to "Oggsford" and was a fine gentleman only with his skills copied off of Dan Cody.
Tom has an affair with Myrtle Wilson, who also happens to be engaged to George Wilson at the same time. Daisy forgives Tom for cheating on her because she trusts that he truly loves her. “Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time." (Fitzgerald 251-252) However, readers know that Tom did not truly love her, he is only married to her because of her pure beauty and qualities, “in a white palace the king’s daughter, the golden girl” with an “inexhaustible charm” and a voice “full of money” (Fitzgerald 76).
Introduction- Is being immoral bad when everyone around does it? The Great Gatsby is told from the view of Nick Carraway, he tells the story of his friend Jay Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, there is a billboard with the eyes of a man named Dr. T. J. Eckleburg; the eyes are a representation of the eyes of God. The eyes of God oversee a place called the Valley of Ashes; a place where a great amount of moral wasteland is. The moral wasteland that is seen through the eyes of T. J. Eckleburg is infidelity because the action can break a strong bond, dishonesty because some people may not trust the person anymore, and overstepping others' boundaries can make a bond thin away.
Adultery- In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne Commits adultery. Once she has committed she gets shamed for life. Adultery is also a very important point throughout the story. It shows how it can wreak havoc on anyone’s life.
The Great Gatsby: Marriage Marriage in The Great Gatsby was not successful because of the lack of happiness, faithfulness, and care for the kids from those marriages. It was also hard to get a divorce in the 1920s, so many people stayed in marriages that they did not want anymore. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which takes place in the 1920s, there were a lot of marriages that were still together but not successful. Tom and Daisy, the first couple you see in The Great Gatsby, were married in 1919, and the book takes place in 1922. Daisy seemed happy in the relationship to the outside world at first according to chapter 4 pages 76 through 77, ‘...I’d never seen a girl so mad about her husband.
Title The quote uttered by Benjamin Franklin, “Where there is marriage without love, there will be love without marriage,” has transformed into an aphorism of the modern day. The meaning of this proverb is that when there is a loveless marriage, there will tend to be marital affairs. This leads right into one of the most prominent themes of The Great Gatsby: the theme of infidelity. Marriage, as portrayed in the novel, is flawed.
The parties are ironic in themselves because the at the parties there are huge amounts of infidelity, “the world and its mistress returned to Gatsby’s house, and Gatsby wants Daisy to come to his parties so that they can rekindle their love for each other, “Gatsby’s very careful about his women” thus causing Daisy to commit acts of infidelity in her relationship with Tom (Fitzgerald 65, 77). However, when Daisy finally gets a chance to attend one of Gatsby’s parties and she is not impressed and she feels out of place at the party because she is not used to the lifestyle that Gatsby has. This shows the impossibility of Gatsby ever achieving his dream of being with Daisy because Daisy would never leave Tom for Gatsby because she is so used to
Magazines, motion pictures, wars. The mentioned are all contributions to changes to society; particularly changes to morality. World War I caused multiple changes in America. The roaring twenties was focused on enjoying life and living up the years of one’s youth. These changes are demonstrated in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.
While talking about her relationship with her husband, Myrtle says, “The only crazy I was when I married [Wilson]” (Fitzgerald 35). Though Myrtle is talking about her husband, Wilson, her comment also reveals an important dynamic of the relationship between Tom and Myrtle. Myrtle reveals that she regrets marrying her husband because he had little money. This regret shows itself through the relationship between Tom and Myrtle. Tom, a wealthier man, holds a greater status and power than Wilson, a poorer man.
Just like Daisy, Myrtle chooses money over love. She cheats on her husband George with Tom. Myrtle was a woman from the lower class who desired to be a part of the higher class. Tom spoiled Myrtle and gave her the lifestyle she always wanted. She belittles her husband and talk bad about him because he is not at the top of the social ladder where Tom is.
First of all, Tom Buchanan and George Wilson largely shared their attitudes toward women. For example, it is clear that Tom is concerned that Daisy, his wife, would go off on her own and do things by herself. One instance of him acknowledging this concern is when he says "I wonder where in the devil he met Daisy. By God, I may be old−fashioned in my ideas, but women run around too much these days to suit me” (Fitzgerald 111). Tom says this after finding out that Gatsby had met his wife, implying that Daisy was “running around too much” simply by going anywhere at all without his prior knowledge.
Fidelity keeps relationships together in modern society. There are many different relationship issues in the story. Infidelity is seen between Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby because of different assets that are being seen as more important than love itself. The failing relationships are because of problems caused by wealth. Fitzgerald criticizes the value of wealth by the infidelity between the different characters in the story.
In the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby, the author identifies a huge problem throughout the novel. Fitzgerald provided us with many characters that displayed infidelity, for example Tom and Daisy. Daisy stayed married to Tom because of his great deal of money and assets, though deep down, she felt miserable and melancholy about the relationship. On the other hand Tom felt he could do as he pleased because of his physical stature and how much money he had. They would both constantly cheat on each other and have relationships with other partners, however they did not get a divorce due to their own selfish reasons.
The novel describes the nature of men being either loyal companions or complete pigs. Tom Buchanan and George Wilson are two characters who are completely different people, but despite their differences they still manage to have a few things in common. One thing that
Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby by F Scotts Fitzgerald love and money motivates every character. They all had made decisions based on love and money, no matter the consequences, no matter if it was good or bad they still made those decisions through the love they had for someone and their desire for money. Tom Buchanan 's love for daisy was pure and true throughout the book the great gatsby he even made some hard decisions all out the love possesed for her. A very critical part of the the novel was when tom 's wife had killed George Wilson 's wife Myrtle Wilson in a automotive accident. When George came to tom about what happened questioning him about who killed his wife, Tom could see that George was furious and would be willing to do anything to the person who killed his beloved wife.
