Symbolic Interactionalism is the study of things to which we attach meaning are the key to understanding how we view the world and communicate with one another. Princess and The Frog is a great movie, it uses symbolic interactionalism to show what a great symbol Tiana’s dad was in her life. Positive sanctions are a reward or positive reaction for following norms, ranging from a smile to a material reward. Tiana’s family was your average middle class family. The only norm Tiana really saw during the movie was to work hard for what you want, and follow your dreams. Tiana’s dad James went on and on about this piece of property he wanted to build a restaurant on. The property was an old sugar mill factory. When Tiana’s dad died he lost his dream to buy the sugar mill and start a restaurant. Tiana got two jobs and saved every tip, and every pay check until she had enough money to put a down payment on the property. The positive sanctions out of this is because she worked hard and she rewarded herself with her and her dads dream building. When she told everybody the good news, she got smiles and congratulations for reaching her goal. This goes back to symbolic interactionalism with him being such a huge influence on her life and letting her know that she can do anything and everything if she puts her mind to it. He helped her look at the world in a different way. She used what he taught her and applied it to her everyday life. This is a type of society in which life is intimate; a community in which everyone knows everyone else and people share a sense of togetherness. Tiana and her dad would most of the time cook Gumbo. The other families would make separate dishes and they all would gather and eat on the pouch of someone’s house. They all looked out for one another. Most of the time the doors to all the house would be left open during the day. They trusted one another, everybody had a connection. The dads all are the head of the house and go work hard every day. Tiana’s dad even served in the military. They helped on another out when the other person needs
