Social injustice is a problem we have in the world not only today but also in earlier time. The Scottsboro Boys and Arthur Miller’s story The Crucible showed three great examples of social injustice we have today in America. Many innocent people’s lives were at stake and the only people who could save them were misrepresenting, manipulative, and egotistical behavior. Is a little white lie worth innocent people’s lives?
In the early 1500’s witchcraft was punishable by death. In The Crucible nine-eight people were accused of witchcraft for selfish motivations. In 1931, two young women accused nine African American Boys of raping them because they were crossing state line and they were prostitutes’.

It all started when Abigail Williams and eleven other girls were caught dancing in the woods, which is punishable by whipping, but instead of just saying yeah we was dancing in the woods and just took the whipping so played it off for a while until someone else said they were in the woods with the devil. That’s when she said “I want to open myself! I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand."” so at this point it looks like they’re going to calm down, but no that’s when she had to basically say I was dancing with the devil but I wasn’t the only one.” That’s when she started saying “ I …show more content…
” Now at this point in the story we know she is a corrupt minded individual who is mainly worried about herself but since we are people who in most case believe in a young lady that cries all the people convicted hung or that at least we have to infer.
In 1931 a group of boy that became known as The Scottsboro Boys. They were nine young black men, falsely accused of raping two white women on a train near Scottsboro, Alabama.Several white teenagers jumped off the train and told the sheriff that they had been allegedly attacked by a group of black teenagers. When all of sudden two young ladies rush off the train and accused the boys of raping them. When in actuality most of the boys were not even in the same car as the young ladies. They were really accusing the boys of raping because they were prostitutes and they were crossing state line which was illegally, When you are rape there are more than likely some kind of sign of a struggle but when Dr.John Lynch ,and Dr. R.R. Bridges examined victims Ruby Bates and Victoria Price less than two hours after the alleged rapes occurred the two doctors found semen in the vaginas of both women, they found little evidence to support their claims that they had been raped ,so in all reality they had lied to get people over the fact that they were prostitutes. By the end all of the nine boys that were convicted and found guilty and all served at least eighteen years in a Alabama chain gang before being either pardon or
In both The Crucible and in modern day witch hunts, witch hunts are caused out of fear or for personal gain. Jill Schonebelen wrote a research paper on Witchcraft allegations, refugee protection and human rights. Throughout this article, it mentions the persecution of witches today in communities around the globe, mentioning the flashbacks of similar strategies that were used in the past, doing different types of tortures. In Modern days, recent generations have abandoned wonderful traditions. Rather, recollecting others with distasteful memories such as witchcraft.
With this knowledge, we can start to see the role that the English legal system may have played in keeping the volume of executions for witchcraft lower than that of continental Europe. By giving the accused people a legitimate trial process and requiring evidence to prove guilt, the English may have been able to keep the death toll down by a significant
There are several incidences in history when someone was accused of witchcraft. Maybe they didn’t have anything to do with witchcraft but if someone said it, everyone believed them. Some many people’s lives were taken because of something they didn’t do not had a part in. From June – September 1692, 19 men and women have been convicted of witchcraft. They were carted to Gallows Hill, a barren slope near Salem Village for hanging.
There is a certain polarity that comes with the territory in witchcraft. In most witch trials, there was a sense of “he said, she said”, one side claiming one thing and the other disagreeing. This seemed to flow into the realm of historical thought on the matter. There is a dividing line of external and internal interpretations on the subject of the witch trials, especially including the trials in Salem. However, I argue that the line between the external and internal interpretations of the witch trials is blurred, the sides often bleeding into each
Terry Goodkind once said, “Once you place the crown of a liar on your head, you can take it off, but it leaves a stain for all time” This old adage rings true for many characters in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Many of them lied, cheated, omitted, and manipulated their way through the court and their own neighbors for the good of their own personal agenda; and the effects of those dishonest actions affected them for the rest of their lives. My whole life I have heard it said that little white lies do not matter. But they do, they matter a lot. They build on top of each other, snowballing into much bigger lies with much larger consequences.
“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life . . . I have given you my soul; leave me my name” (Crucible)! The people that were accused during the Salem Witch Trials lost not only their lives, but they also lost their names.
Back in the late sixteen hundreds the people during that time are very strict on religion. During the time a colony in the Americas called the puritans believed in witchcraft. People that are accused are guilty till proven innocent. In the Crucible it portrays injustice by how Danforth is not following court that is ruled by religion, Abigail intimidating the court, and the accused not having proper court rights. The following reasons will explain why the crucible is injustice.
What determines who is powerful and who is powerless in a society? Is the concept of power accessible to everyone or just certain individuals who possess incumbent resources? According to the Cambridge English dictionary, power is defined as the ability or right to control people and events, or to influence the way people act or think in important ways. Many people in modern society strive to reach an overall powerful status amongst others, for this is evident in the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In certain instances, there are even different branches of the notion.
Hypocrisy is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. In the book the Crucible there are many hypocrites some dishonest some just following any one to be guilty, but one of the many character is Judge Danforth he mocks Marry when he ask "How were you instructed in your life? Do you not know that God damns all liars?"(3-84), since Danforth is in power for being the judge he thinks that everyone else is ignorant and not being equal as him.
Do you remember learning about the Holocaust in school? Do you remember all of the feelings and thoughts you had? Imagine if it was you. Imagine if you were one of the soldiers. Would you stand up for what was right?
Miller’s purpose of The Crucible was to represent and mirror the social injustice under McCarthyism as people falsely accused each other because their fear, jealousy and solely hatred of one another. Although, around 1950-1954 the “innocent until proven guilty” clause existed, most trials and accusations were led by “guilty until proven innocent.” Despite Miller’s efforts to criticise people’s actions as
During the 1600s witchcraft, had become a large epidemic in New England. Women were the focus when it came to a person being accused of witchcraft. Men cannot be left out of this epidemic. There were a handful of men who were accused. Most of the men who were accused were either married to a female who had been accused of witchcraft.
The Real Victim Have you ever gotten in trouble for something you didn't do because you didn't have enough evidence or power to convince them? Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" has a lot of problems in it that are corrupted. Elizabeth, who is John Proctor’s wife is convicted of witchcraft and is now on trial to get imprisoned or even hanged. An example of this is when John Proctor is saying the court is getting tricked by girls who are playing a game, and the court takes that offensive. John is now on trial to prove the girls are playing a game but it's not going so well because the leading girl, Abigail who loves John and wants to be with him, is the one who accused John's wife of witchcraft and Parris, the minister of the church, is against John as well and is pointing every little thing John does wrong.
Social class can define a person depending on who you are. Chances are, you will probably get judged by your social class like for an example, High social class people will get treated a little nicer than those in the lower social class. In the Crucible, people got judged on what their beliefs were or how they lived. John Proctor was a man who was first in the higher class with a lot of friends. Later on in the play/story, people have started accusing other people of WitchCraft and John Proctor got involved and was eventually hung at the end of the play.
Witchcraft: Child’s Play or Reality? In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible’, witchcraft is the main conflict of the play. Set in a Puritan Massachusetts Colony in the year 1692, most anything that cannot be solved by the church or a doctor is unnatural. The first thing that comes to mind is witchcraft, which the punishment for is hanging unless you confess.
