Lilli Walters Mr. Glorfield English 11a 15 December 2022 Us and Witches Imagine you and your friends have been caught dancing in the woods at night. You did not think it was a big deal, but before you know it you are accused of being a witch and threatened to be hanged. There is no good way out of the situation. If you tell the truth, saying you’re innocent and was just dancing for fun, everyone thinks you’re lying. If you tell them you are guilty of being a witch, that would be lying, and while they might release you, they will make you accuse others of being a witch. This whole situation sounds absurd, but almost 330 years ago, this is exactly what was happening. In his play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller gives a glimpse as to what …show more content…
In the play, there are countless examples of people being stubborn. Abigail, for example, accused many people of being a witch just to save herself. She knew what could happen to innocent people, and she had multiple opportunities to admit that she made it all up. However, her stubbornness took over, and she never confessed. Another example in the play, is when John Proctor was accused of being a witch. He could have easily gotten out of being hanged if he would just confess that he was a witch, even though he wasn’t. But, he was too …show more content…
Murial Maignan Wilcins explained in their article that, “At the root of all stubbornness is the fear of letting go of your own ideas, convictions, decisions and at times, identity” (Wilcins 1). Because of this, stubbornness can be both good and bad. In Abigails experience, she was stubborn because she did not want to be proven wrong, even though she knew she was wrong. This is a bad example of stubbornness. John Proctor on the other hand, would not confess because he did not want to go against what he believed in and lie. This is where stubbornness can be a good thing. In today’s world we see both sides of stubbornness as well. People will choose a political leader that they like, and that leader can say or do something awful, but the person will still support them because they are too stubborn to admit they were wrong. On the other hand, a good example of stubbornness is ignoring negative criticism or something along those
Mary Beth Norton (2002) explains that new accusations of witchcraft would spread beyond Salem’s outcasts and onto more respected members of society. Typically witchcraft was viewed as a working- class crime, but soon two upstanding Salem church members, Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse, were accused. Rebecca Nurse was one of six women tried during the Court of Oyer and Terminer’s second sitting, from June 28th to July 2nd. Her trial proved to be particularly shocking. Nurse was convicted despite a petition of support from thirty-nine friends and neighbors, and active family efforts to discredit her accusers.
Characters who confess and name other “witches” are viewed as glorious people who ultimately choose God over the Devil, giving them power over others in the village. In contrast, characters who deny witchcraft claims are disgraced. Accused witches who do not confess are convicted and executed
Alberto Carrera 27 January 2023 CCR English 3 Block 4 The Crucible by Arthur Miller There were characters in the play that were blind to the truth which were some like Abigail, Danefort, and Marry Warrens. Throughout the play these characters were blind to the truth and knowing what they were up to. Abigail accuse so many innocent person of witchcraft which led to some deaths and many in jail. Judge Danforth who were the one who sentence many death or jail knowing in the end he doesn’t want to know the truth and want Proctor to confess and like Marry who told the truth, but lied in the end.
They have been charged with witchcraft. They shall be hung for not confessing to their wrongdoings. In the book the Crucible it's about tragedy it Arthur Miller wrote about how it was scary back in the 1690’s. People were charged with witchcraft for doing nothing really. Anyone could just accuse you of it and you could just be called guilty right there.
Also, throughout the play Abigail accuses many people of witchcraft in order to save herself. An example of this is when Hale questions Abigail in act 1, and Abigail accuses several girls of
Reice Thurston, Havyn Garren, Marlen Jaimes-Jaimes Gann English 05 April 2023 Salem Witch Trials Argument Many people can remember their days getting in trouble as a kid, from dropping that priceless vase their mother has had in her family for generations, to hitting a baseball through the window. One common thread that almost always happens as a child, they lie. It could have been out of shame, or wanting to get rid of that vase.
Abigail has faith that Proctor loves her even when he constantly dismisses her accusations. She believes Proctor is lying to himself
“Evil hiding among us is an ancient theme” (John Carpenter). Throughout human history, harsh themes have surfaced time and time again. Within society, these subjects appear daily. In fact, in literature authors include these topics to provide further engagement for the reader. Among the themes displayed in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the most pertinent of which are human weakness, displayed by John Proctor, vindictiveness, by Abigail Williams, and hypocrisy demonstrated by Danforth.
Society has shown to demand conformity through beliefs throughout the texts. Due to this, some individuals suffered as they opposed this ideal. It is especially relevant in ‘The Crucible’ as the belief in witches created a stigma of fear, a stigma that brought forth destruction. Abigail’s beliefs of her to be the most important and that she must get everything she desires brings suffering for many. She claims many to study witchcraft but simply disagrees with what they say or do.
Self preservation is one of mankind's base instincts and is ever present in everyone. This animalistic instinct can cause a person to do things seen as morally wrong by others or some will go to the most extreme lengths to keep themselves alive. Within the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller onse such character displays a very evident sense of self preservation and that character is none other than Mary Warren. Within the story Mary Warren is very guilty of raising hysteria amongst the town because of her actions due to self preservation.
Poor Behavior in “The Crucible” Ever wonder why people dies in The Crucible? The impact of Poor Behavior is exhibited throughout The Crucible. Most of the characters act badly.
Society today is really judgemental. If you don’t wear the right clothes or have the right car then you will get judged. It’s kinda like in the book The Crucible if you weren't a puritan then you were an outcast or you might have been a witch. One of the puritan girls Abigail Williams blamed a lot of women who were called puritans and lived the puritan way. In this case people just judged them without looking into far more research.
As Bob Marley once said, “The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” Integrity is the quality of being honest and upholding one’s morals and principles. Living in a fast-paced and ever-changing society, human beings have come into contact with adversity and hardship all throughout history. Those who act with integrity during tough times have a major influence on those around them, and taking a stand and upholding ones’ beliefs and morals at great self sacrifice can inspire and encourage others to do the same. Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible is a prime example of upholding integrity, and the characters within the play face difficult choices between doing
Hypocrisy is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. In the book the Crucible there are many hypocrites some dishonest some just following any one to be guilty, but one of the many character is Judge Danforth he mocks Marry when he ask "How were you instructed in your life? Do you not know that God damns all liars?"(3-84), since Danforth is in power for being the judge he thinks that everyone else is ignorant and not being equal as him.
This is one of the most common traits displayed in The Crucible. The first example I have is when Abigail accused Elizabeth. His is vindictive because Abigail accused Elizabeth so she could get John. The next time this happens is when Mary accuses John so she can live. She told john she would confess then when she tried she got nervous and accused John to save her own life.
