Do you ever wonder what's happening next door? Or even what secrets your boss or friends are hiding? In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury we learn about all these topics and even learn about what would happen if books were illegal and banned across the world.The main character of the book Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books and stops “crime” from happening. In this dystopian society he meets a girl named Clarisse who is very intelligent for her age and opens his eyes up to what is really going on in their society. Through the course of the book Montag learns he is lonely, unhappy and conflicted. Montag is usually stuck at home with his wife Mildred who ignores him all day or he is at work with the other fireman waiting anxiously for a call about someone with books. When Montag meets a 17 year old girl named Clarisse she opens his eyes up to the harsh reality of the world and makes him realize that he is unhappy with his life. At the beginning of the book he tells us “It never went away, that smile, it never went away, as long as he remembered.”(pg.2) This gave us some context around his personal life and emotional state but after meeting Clarisse and talking to her he realized he was lying to himself and he was actually wearing his happiness like a …show more content…
After learning the truth about his job he starts to question everything he has ever done and starts to change his opinion on some of them. On the first page and first sentence he tells us “it was pleasure to burn.”(pg.1) This makes us believe that Montag loves his job and is proud of himself as a human being but later in the book after he has made peace with himself and came to a conclusion about who he is he says to Beatty the fire captain “we never burned right”(pg.113) This shows that Montag finally understands and is no longer battling himself. It also shows the impact that Clarisse had on his mental state and how it really helped
