“Development involves changing your mindset, and the way you think.” In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Clarisse, a free-thinker, helps change Montag, a protagonist in the novel, by changing his perspective on society, in their society currently everyone is brainwashed by the TV. Clarisse changes the way Montag views the society and leaves an impact on him. While others may argue that Mildred, a conformist, had a bigger impact than Clarisse, Clarisse was the one who really helped Montag question the values of society. Clarisse, a free-thinker, would always be doing things which were unusual to the rest of the society, but after Montag meets her, he realizes that he wants to try new things as well.. When Montag first meets Clarisse, Montag finds it unusual how Clarisse opens her mouth for raindrops during rain because he has never seen anyone do that and doesn’t think it is regular. She convinces Montag to try it and later on, “He tilted his head back in the rain, for just a few moments, and opened his mouth.” In this scene, Montag is convinced by Clarisse’s unusual actions but he still tries it, even finding it weird, the society mostly doesn’t stop to think about their actions. Clarisse also shows Montag that he used to think the norm was to burn books and hate them but Clarisse changes Montag’s opinion on books. Montag, “gazed, shaken at that white hand.
