Male circumcision and female circumcision are two highly debated subjects in today’s world because people, cultures, and societies have various viewpoints on both of them. What could be considered as the ‘norm’ in one culture may not be the case in another. Edward Wallerstein once said, “Circumcision is a unique phenomenon. Its origins in antiquity are obscure, its original objectives unknown, its spread to all continents a source of speculation; yet this operation, this first ritual surgery devised by humans, is still in use” (Wallerstein). He accurately sums up the general ideas, debates, and ethical questions that surround the topic of circumcision. The idea is to uncover the reasons that people practice male and female circumcision and …show more content…
Male circumcision dates back to the Egyptians and is the removal of part of or the entire foreskin—either with or without anesthesia (Puri, Kumar, and Ramesh 69-74). Female circumcision is done predominantly in African countries. It generally consists of four types of cutting ranging from least drastic to most drastic type: “Type 1 is removal of the clitoral prepuce (compared to male circumcision), Type 2 the removal of potentially the entire clitoris and some or all of the labia minora, Type 3 ‘infibulation’ involves removing the clitoris, labia minora, and external labia—leaving a very small opening for urination and menstruation, Type 4 or ‘introcision’ involves cutting the perineum” (Rushwan …show more content…
My only participant that was fully knowledgeable about female circumcision had previously learned it in this class. She in particular had a very interesting take on it. Her opinion was that it was another way to “oppress” women. “It is a way for men to control women’s sexuality and by controlling their sexuality--they consequently control them in general.” Her comparison between male and female circumcision was that male circumcision is not done to oppress males, it stems from a totally separate idea. All of the other interviewees had either never heard of it or just briefly heard of the name. I gave them a general explanation of what female circumcision entailed and why it was practiced in some cultures. However it was pictures of the process that really affected them. Instantly they answered that female circumcision was worse than male circumcision and some described it as “horrible” and should “definitely be stopped.” Although all of them were stumped when I asked why this should be stopped but male circumcision is okay. This made one of my participants think about the parallels between the two and stated, “I have never really thought about the two as similar but when you really get to thinking about it they are similar in the fact that they either have absolutely no or extremely little health benefit, they cause a lot of pain, and they are
The practice, according to Ahmed, was not generally observed in her society and was seen by women who practiced Islam as a cultural tradition that was not mandated by the religion. Instead of being a religious requirement, circumcision was viewed as a cultural rite of passage for women. In contrast, male Islam routinely performed female circumcision and considered it as a religious need. Men felt that female circumcision was required to preserve a woman's chastity and purity and to keep her from having sex before marriage. Ahmed claims that female circumcision is not an essential Islamic ritual because of the harm it might cause and because of her own experience with it.
In recent years, there have been anti-circumcision movements gaining steam that mindlessly compares the circumcision of a boy with the genital mutilation of a woman. Circumcision is where the foreskin is trimmed to make my dong look awesome and reduce chances for STD's. What is done to women is equivalent to chopping the head of a penis off. Before I go on further into this, just know that a lot of the language can be offputting, and the images, even though just drawings, can be NOT SAFE FOR WORK.
The Right to Abortion On January 22, 1973, in a 7-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down it’s landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions — including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians (Planned Parenthood). There are many moments in history when Roe v. Wade has been so close to being overturned, yet it is still in place. Abortion should stay legal, or not overturned, for the health of women everywhere. First, this important case took place at the time of abortion being illegal in most states, including Texas, where Roe v. Wade began.

I work at Sonora Regional Medical Center and this week, I have been working at a pediatric clinic and I have learned certain things about circumcisions and when it should be performed on a baby boy. A circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin and, on infants, it is performed within the first few day after birth. It has been found by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), that the benefits of a circumcisions in newborns, outweigh the risks of it, but when the boys age more, it does not necessarily need to be done unless there is a medical reason to do so. There are many benefits to a circumcision including a reduced risk of urinary tract infections, a reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases in men, reduced risk of penile
Nina Smart is brave, and courageous, and strong. Using her own personal story as a memoir captures the reader in numerous ways to begin their thinking on the practice of female genital mutilation, also known as FGM. By using her story, Nina Smart was able to draw attention and sympathy towards those affected by FGM since it was personal and shows how real and terrifying this experience may be. Nina’s story could possibly be very different from the rest of the females’ stories in Sierra Leone who also went through this experience, but their stories all end up to be similar. The story is so varying for Nina since she had grown up in Romania and lived with her white family.
With almost half the nation divided among their views, abortion remains one of the most controversial topics in our society. Since Roe v. Wade, our views in society as well as following court cases have been progressing toward the woman’s right to choose. The precedent set by Roe v. Wade made the Supreme Court acknowledge that it cannot rule specifically when life begins and it also affirms that it is the woman’s right to have an abortion under the 14th Amendment. In the 1st Amendment, the Establishment Clause forbids the government from passing laws “which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another”. Many Christian pro-lifers use their religious beliefs to dispute when life begins.
For those of you who don’t have children, you may not have given a single thought about the importance of why circumcisions are performed in today’s world and the background behind it. The surgery of circumcisions has been done for thousands of years and to this day there is a huge debate on whether the surgery is medically necessary and if it should even be performed. The practice of routine infant circumcision is a painful, potentially harmful, and an unethical procedure that serves no medical necessity and has no tangible health benefits. The practice of Circumcisions is older than recorded history.
During the twentieth- century, lobotomy became a popular procedure performed on patients with neurosis such as schizophrenia, bi-polar mood disorder, personality disorder, etc. Many scientists, especially at the time, argued that poking holes through parts of the brain and swishing parts around helps make patients more calm and cooperative. I predict that lobotomy had no benefits for the patient but rather in a dissociative state to appear calm. By understanding the history of lobotomy, patients' experience and stories, and alternatives we can grasp a better view in how lobotomy was unethical and ineffective. Lobotomy has evolved from various techniques, patients, countries, and psychosurgeons.
A visible way of showing compliance to God's commands in the Jewish faith is the ritual practice of circumcision. Originating from God’s covenant with Abraham circumcision has been diligently practised in Judaism since then. It is seen as a “token of the covenant” for all generations, which forms an “everlasting covenant” (Genesis 17:13). Furthermore, the Abrahamic covenant formed three promises; the promised land, the promise of numerous offspring and the promise of blessing and redemption, all of which have their own level of significance to Jewish people depending on their denomination and level of faith; orthodox, conservative and progressive.
While some find this easy to relate too, others find it difficult to comprehend such a drastic decision because the choice was not to their own bodies. As Ruiz explained, her brother made this decision based on his best interest and his hopeless feeling of being stuck in the wrong body. She states, “ My brother is hell-bent for castration”(4). Ruiz is attempting to convey a lot of different messages in this essay. One of which could be that you cannot alter another human’s way of thinking or rationality.
There are many stories about de-transitioning, and they are typically not written by people who are against the transgender movement. They are written by people who realize transition isn’t what they needed after all. They are written by people who urge caution. This is the necessity of a certification from a duly licensed practitioner A true transgender person who truly has Gender Dysphoria will stand by his or her decision to become the preferred gender.
The textbook brings up the point that circumcision is used in many cultures as a bonding ceremony between young boys and their fathers, and the act is usually performed without any mothers (or women in general) present. Female circumcision by comparison is generally performed by women (however in some cases it is performed by male family members) and usually involves actions that aim to prevent sexual pleasure in order to prevent promiscuous behavior. When you look at the difference in effect that each ceremony has on the lives of its participants it is obvious that many of these cultures are worried more about sexual promiscuity in woman than acts of infidelity caused by men. It is almost as if their saying that it is the women's fault that men cannot control their sexual
Informative Speech: Female Genital Mutilation Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about female genital mutilation and where the controversy of it all lies. Every life is precious regardless if its a full grown person or an unborn child in its mother’s womb. Abortion right does not support the fact that every human has the right to life. Not only does is abortion essentially murder, the effects of abortion on the mother can cause psychological damage and stunts the growth of the number of available babies that could potentially be adopted by willing parents. Abortion should be illegal because it causes harm to society, women and millions of unborn children around the country. Taking the life from the most innocent human beings on earth, before they could even make the decision for themselves, is the most cruel and inhumane action to commit.
