The title of a story can have a deeper meaning than the words on the paper. The title Killings represents flesh and soul. The story Killings is written by Andre Dubus. In the story Killings some may think the author is referring to the deaths of Strout and Frank, but he is actually referring to the death of Matt’s mental health and self-respect. Matt has undergone an emotional change in his life that left him angry and sorrowful. This change has occurred after traumatic events in Matt’s life.

Frank and Mary Ann had started dating shortly after Richard and Mary had split, but they were not divorced yet. Richard was twenty-six years old and was very upset that he and his wife had separated. Mary Ann had two children with her ex husband Richard Strout. Frank and MaryAnn’s relationship was frowned upon by Ruth. Matt questioned it at first but then he discovered that his son really liked this woman and that he would support them in their relationship. Matt wished that Frank would help MaryAnn get over her divorce and be there for her kids. Richard saw Frank and MaryAnn getting close and he was irritated that his wife had moved on so quickly. Richard has his own idea on how to solve this issue “Strout came in the front door and shot Frank twice in the chest and once in the face with a 9 mm automatic” (4). The circle of killings is first caused by the murder of Matt Fowler’s son, Frank, by Richard, which leads to the retaliatory killing of Richard, by Matt. This infinite, unforgiving circle of killings and attempts at retribution is what Dubus portrays in a nonjudgmental view. The readers are left to see how the act of killing affects Richard and Matt and decide how much their retribution costs them.
Killing” the short story by Andre Dubis was interesting from the beginning to the end. Spoiler it is about to murders but if you look behind the murders it could also be a love story. The loving father Matt is at the funeral of his son. The entire story I was trying to put myself inside of Matt’s shoes and thinking about what I would want for my future children and if someone killed him and the potential I had dreamed of for years that he would achieve. Matt would envision the night his son was killed several times throughout the story and this is just a reminder that Matt wanted his son back in any form in this case it was in memory.

Mary Anne had a normal life with normal goals before she was dropped into the war. O’Brien says, “From the sixth grade on they had known for a fact that someday they would be married, and live in a fine gingerbread house near Lake Erie, and have three healthy yellow-haired children, and grow old together, and no doubt die in each other's arms and be buried in the same walnut casket.” (94) A regular teenage girl with regular visions of the future arrives to aid the hurt and before she know it these goals are just a blurry memory of her old innocent childhood. This girl who had only come down for a visit soon sees the life of Vietnamese culture and learns more, at this point it's seen as just a fun learning experience.
