The problems of the present can be observed from literature from the past or the future. Every book has an issue that is still very much present in today’s world. It’s almost as if every book can see the future, foreshadowing issues that are existent in the present time. The novel All American Boys foreshadows the death of George Floyd. While some issues are not very serious in some books, there are issues that are very prevalent today such as racism, police brutality, and income inequality. These are all issues that can’t be fully resolved, however awareness will severely reduce it. Racism has become a very prevalent issue in today’s time. Politicians such as Donald Trump are seen as racist, and some big celebrities who have made racist remarks …show more content…
The wealthy have so much power because of the money they possess. They have the power to change the economy through production of goods and services which the less wealthy tend to live on. If they stop producing these goods or services, the less wealthy will collapse. Hunger Games touches on this issue. The more wealthy districts have more money to train, and have more of a probability to win the Hunger Games. District 1 manufactures goods for the capitol such as jewelry and other goods that the other districts use as well. The less wealthy people tend to pay more taxes and the wealthier people tend to pay less tax than they are supposed to pay. Protests such as the “I am in the 99%” where they protest that the other 1 percent is the wealthy and the majority of income goes to the 1 percent instead of the 99 percent. This gap will still and always exist, no matter what happens to the economy, unless the country becomes …show more content…
George Floyd was a man who was killed by an officer, where Floyd used a counterfeit bill at a store. Many BLM protests started to happen, and also police brutality or killing has become even more popular, as the police have to calm down the protests, which may result in protesters being arrested and maybe assaulted or dead. The novel All American Boys, a high schooler was assaulted by a police officer where he allegedly was stealing a bag of chips, when he wasn’t. The police officer assaulted him very badly, and ended up in the hospital for 3-4 days. Police have a lot of power to the point that they can kill someone for no valid reason and not get punished or at least reprimanded. Police brutality is a common thing in today’s world, with black people being mainly
However, research demonstrates that often times men of color are treated harshly which leads to negative perceptions of police officers. Police brutality is a crime that is has been surfacing in the news recently. Some people are just starting to realize that these injustices against the black community really occur, while others are well aware. The recent shootings, different run-ins with officers being filmed while doing such harmful actions against African American men is an example of police brutality and, that reminds us that as a society work needs to be done to improve police and community relations. A black male cannot even walk down the street on a cold night because he might be a suspect from something or he may be of danger to the people around.
Evidently, police brutality is running the media lately, this is not so secretive but rather painful to hear. “Michael Brown’s murder represents the tip of a body pile... several videos have emerged of police assaulting people... for reasons justifiable only to the insane.” He alludes to one of the biggest police brutality murder cases in the country and continues by bringing up other brutality cases similar to that; the heroes who need to protect everyone as their legal job, are the ones hurting those in need.
In reality there is a huge problem and there is not enough awareness because there is a group of people who have a lot of power and don’t want that type of awareness being raised. The justice system and police show a large amount of institutional racism and how it exist and it is there and won’t be changing
Police brutality is often directed towards Black people and other people of color, who are more likely to be stopped, searched, and arrested by law enforcement officers. This discrimination is a result of implicit bias, which perpetuates the idea that Black people are more likely to commit crimes and are therefore more likely to be subjected
Police brutality is most often affected by race. But if you stay updated with the news, African Americans seem to be the targets. African Americans make up thirteen percent of the world’s population (“Police Killed At Least 223 Black Americans In The Year After Colin Kaepernick’s
Police brutality has been around for many years, but has most recently gained attention through the cases of many such as Michael Brown and Garner. Michael Brown’s situation is a little more different than Eric. Michael was stealing a pack of cigs but as he was coming out of the store police officers were already dispatched. His partner actually got away from the police officers but as for Michael he was still being chased, Michael was chased for a while so he decided to surrender but as he surrendered the officers shot him down. Witnesses said that Michael decided to
The numbers in the police are falling short in order to successfully create peace within the country. As a result, many police officers feel they have to abuse their power and go to extremes to stop criminals. One of the biggest problems with police brutality is the disgusting racist police culture and how they treat minorities such as blacks and Hispanics. On the third of March, 1991, a black man named Rodney King was involved in a high-speed car chase with officers from the Los Angeles Police Department. The officers were successful with pulling King over.
Police brutality, since the birth of our nation, has had a history of lawmen overstepping what their authority grants. We can see how these lawmen viewed themselves as being above the law as far back as the settler days when the west had outlaw like police. Many western videos depict the ruthless Sheriff acting as the judge and executioner. The beginning of substantial documented police corruption and brutality were attributed to the poor labor workers. These events were related to the labor strikes such as the Lawrence textile strike of 1912 and the Pullman Strike of 1894 where police arbitrarily beat striking workers for no reason (McPherson, John Bruce).
Police Brutality in the United States of America Police brutality has been a problem in the United States of America for a long time. The regulations that cops should abide by hasn’t changed, but the actions of officers have. Police officers have a different view of the rules that they should follow. The power that police have has gone to their heads, and they take advantage of the power. Police are needed in America because of how society is, but there are things that the police do that shows a complete misuse of their power.
Police brutality does not just happen to young African American boys and men, but to women as well.
While in a chokehold, “Garner repeatedly told officers I can’t breathe, eventually he lost consciousness”(Eric Garner dies in NYPD Chokehold). The killing of Tamir Rice a 12 year old black boy who was shot by white police officers in Ohio. (What is police brutality?) Rice was playing with a toy gun in a park when police officers arrived at the scene and shot him within seconds of their encounter. The killing of George Floyd captured on video and witnessed by millions, ignited widespread protest against police violence and systemic racism.
It has been going on for a long time, but over the past 20 years there has been a shocking increase in police killings. With the use of modern technology, we have been able to witness these acts firsthand which is why it is being talked about so much lately. As I have researched this topic, I have found few causes as well as some detrimental effects. Racial profiling is an extremely notable cause of police brutality.
Similarly, the 2020 protests across the country following the killing of George Floyd highlighted concerns about police militarization and its impact on civil liberties and community trust. While the killing was not a direct result of militarization, it raised tensions about entrusting officers with the level of weaponry that the military
As a result, there is a drastic increase of violent outburst between both sides. For the last years, it was reported that 51.5 percent of black were killed by police officers (ibtimes.com). On the other hand, there have been 51,548 assaults against law enforcement and it resulted in 14,453 injuries in 2015 alone (nleomf.org). In the United States, recently, police brutality has been a popular subject all over the news and social media.
The first step we should take towards demolishing racism is to allow children, starting at the age of 7, to learn more about the impact of racism, specifically by having to watch a program that he/she will watch 24/7 all about anti-racism. By introducing this topic at a very young age, the child’s mind will be able to easily understand and comprehend the day-to-day struggles of those who have faced the troubles of racism and will motivate them to never go down that path. In terms of laws, racism is hardly mentioned, which goes to show, the U.S. needs to enact more laws to help cripple racism. For instance, for every second some orange skinned, wigged, egotistical maniac uses some atrocious, racist, name-calling, rant directed towards an individual, they will have to pay a small loan of a million dollars. Groups such as the NAACP, the Black Alliance For Just Immigration and the Black Lives Matter Movement are all great
