Immediately after the enlightenment period, in the late 18th century and early 19th century Europe underwent multiple economic and social changes that had a major impact in the country, as well as their society. These diverse developments that happen affected Europe in many ways and for several decades. During this time, Europe met a drastic demographic transformation due to these changes. In addition, it was also a time of extraordinary political renovation that helped Europe become the world's most pioneer authority (Spielvogel 564). The rich often lived in the outer edges of the cities (Spielvogel 611). They typically had their own homes with gardens. While the poor, lived in rooms that were typically small with unsanitary conditions (Spielvogel 611). The city streets were generally used as cesspools and wide open drains (Spielvogel 613). During this period, food was also corrupted to look like it was good and the government did nothing about it. Certain products such as beer and milk were sold to consumers watered down. This rebellion was known as romanticism. It was based on emotion, sentiment and feelings (Spielvogel 649). One important representation of this was The Sorrows of the Young Werther a book by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. There were many plays and novels that came after this groundbreaking book.

Another important trait of romanticism was individualism. This trait displays an importance on a person’s exclusive attributes. One important writer that displayed this trait was Thomas Carlyle (Spielvogel 649). The love for nature was also very evident in romanticism. William Wordsworth was an English poet that expressed this trait in his works.

Romanticism was also being expressed in the art form. The artist’s work was an illustration of their internal feelings. One important painter that express it in his paintings was Caspar David Friedrich (Spielvogel 651). He believed that artist should not only paint what they see, but also what’s inside of them.
