“A friend will strengthen you with his prayers, bless you with his love, and encourage you with his love,” (Proverb Zone). Friendship is the helping of others by inviting them to be a part of one’s life. In Chris Crutcher’s Whale Talk, T.J. has to build a swim team that can achieve a letterman jacket to prove others wrong about themselves. Friendship is seen throughout many books including this one. In Whale Talk, Chris Crutcher demonstrates friendship ensures that people are not alone through school teams, anti-bullying, and mentorship.
In Whale Talk, Friendship is demonstrated by school teams. In the book, T.J. is talking to Simet and says, “‘Know a kid named Jackie Craig?’ Simet says he knows by sight, but that’s about it. Jackie is nondescript… He’s been cut from J.V. football,” (Crutcher 47). The school team created by Simet and T.J. provided Jackie teammates and friends. If T.J. and Simet did not do that, Jackie would be alone. Many people go through loneliness and by reading this book, people can figure out how to make friends. Not only is friendship shown through school teams, it is also

In the book, T.J. and Georgia are looking at Heidi, “The sound of running water brings our attention to Heidi in the kitchen, squeezing dish soap into the filling basin. She pulls herself up onto the lip, stretching to snag a bristle brush, then begins scrubbing her arms. Georgia sighs, closes her eyes, whispers, ‘She thinks if she can wash it off, her daddy will love her,’” (Crutcher 69). T.J. helped Heidi because Heidi was feeling bad about her skin color. T.J. helped her by showing her skin color was cool and unique. If T.J. did not do that, Heidi would keep scrubbing until she bled. Many people have issues with their skin color. By seeing this, people that feel uncomfortable about their skin color can let go of their troubles and live a normal life. Friendship has been shown many ways throughout the
Pittacus Lore once said, “The price of a memory, is the memory of the sorrow it brings.” In the realistic fiction book Whale Talk, by Chris Crutcher, The main character’s name is TJ, and TJ’s father said, “a good day is one in which you avoid remembering the events of July 27, 1968” (Crutcher 56). What happened that day was that an eighteen month old boy was wandering and was lost. What resulted from this was that he ended up outside and got stuck in between two of the tires of TJ’s father’s pickup truck. TJ’s dad didn’t check the truck, and started driving without noticing what he did.
Chris Crutcher wrote the book Whale Talk for a reason to entertain the reader and because he felt it would send a positive and negative message to the reader. The book has multiple messages such as, bullying, harassment, racism, violence, abuse, teamwork, caring for others and family values. The biggest message he sent was about family values ( how family can affect a child’s life in a positive and negative way ). The first topic in the story is language, how the language that Rich Marshal uses towards his step daughter Heidi effects her. On page 94, Georgia is a friend of Tjs who is also a psychologist.
In life, a true friend is considered to be one of the most important things a person can have. Sometimes friends get in trouble, and when they do it’s your responsibility to help them. The soldier from Panos Ioannides’ story “Gregory” and Ronnie Quiller from Joseph Whitehill’s “The Day of the Last Rock Fight” both have friends that they constantly try to keep out of trouble. When in trouble, a friend will do everything in their power to assist you.
In every society there is a norm which is an expectation or ideal features for the individual. In Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher Andy Mott and Carly are rebels against society and its norms. Rebellion comes in many forms for some it’s how they style their hair or their clothes, but for Andy it's with his “could-care-less” attitude. In addition to his attitude he is ruthless.
Imagine if onee decision you made affected the rest of your life. Rich Marshall made a few questionable decisions. Those decisions had a big impact on the future. The impact those decisions had on Rich's life did not help it's physical or mental state of health. In the book, Whale Talk, by Chris Crutcher, unhealthy relationships dictated Rich Marshall’s future.
Friendship is a wonderful yet confusing thing. This concept is brilliantly displayed in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. In the book, the main character, Reuven, and Danny Saunders become friends through an interesting turn of events during a baseball game, the short version being that Danny ended up putting Reuven in the hospital with a baseball in the eye. After Reuven gets over some feelings of bitterness towards Danny, the two grow to be great friends. There are many difficulties when it comes to friendship, but the beauty of a good friendship is that good friends can power through them.
To advance in society, the characters must stick together and not attempt to tear each other apart. It is hypocritical for someone to condemn another person for something that they also practice; “colorism and traditional U.S. racism are inextricably intertwined, yet distinct” (Harris 54). However, this demonstrates how racism has influenced the thoughts of those oppressed by it. It is ironic that although Janie is the person with the lightest skin and has grown up in a white household, she does not have these views. The people with darker skin have these colorist views toward her.
Even though, he supports her in while she is trying to open up the pool, he isn’t helping her. They only people trying to get the pool open to everyone is Glory, and Frankie, her best friend from Ohio, is not much help. Frankie dislikes African-Americans which is influenced by her racist father and her abusive brother. However, Frankie’s sister and sister 's boyfriend are trying to influence her the opposite direction that her father is. Like it says on page 92 “I was talking with my colored friend, the police came.
Overall, Knowles final message about friendship is to have trust in a relationship. If a friendship does not include this feature, it will no be a long lasting relationship. Also, jealousy was proven to weaken a friendship because it causes an internal conflict. In conclusion, trust is the characteristic that brings two people closer together for the
Although researchers have tried to defined friendship simply focused on the differences between friends and non-friends, Willard Hartup (1996) cited in Brownlow (2012, p. 239) argues that a whole range of relationship is possible from best friend to good friend to occasional friend to non-friend. Therefore, it is far more complex than just a definition between friends and non-friends. Now that friendship is defined it is essential to define and understand qualitative approach. Unlike a quantitative data, qualitative method or approach involves the analysis of talk, interview material and written text such as transcripts, newspaper diaries or articles and it does not use any measurements nor is in numerical form.
What is a friend? A common response to this question seems to be someone who accepts another for who they are. Another less used response to the same question is someone who leave another better than they once were. These two half definitions of friendship come to gather to explain that friend is someone who takes another how they already are and leaves that better than their previous state. True friendship often adds loyalty to ones character resulting in acts of courage.
From the friends’ constant determination to look out for each other, to the uses of teamwork and intelligence to accomplish goals, the author successfully conveys his message to the reader. It shows the brilliance of the author and his use of literary devices to five a moral
All of the main characters fight for friendship even if they do so in different ways and for different reasons. All of them feel in need of someone to talk to if it is about science, about what horrible things one has done or about being different and alone. Another feature is the loss of friendship in all cases. Victor loses his friends to death, and so does Walton while the creature never really “fulfilled his dream of being anyone’s true friend” (Jeray 69). This way the novel not only shows the importance of friendship and having companions but also the possible consequences of either being rejected by everyone or of losing beloved people partly even due to own
She has been a stranger to herself for six years, not knowing about her racial identity. She had never thought of herself as black because she has lived with white people all her life. It takes is one photograph with her friends for her to find out her skin color. In the book it states, “Ah was wid dem white chillun so much till Ah didn’t know Ah wuzn’t white till Ah was round six years old. Wouldn’t have found it out then, but a man come long takin’ pictures and without askin’ anybody, Shelby, dat was de oldest boy, he told him to take us.
“A true friend accepts who you are and helps you become who you should be.” Steve and Nathaniel proved that friendship and happiness can be real in the novel The Soloist by Steve Lopez. The way friendship is portrayed in the novel is unexpected in such a way that we don’t see it happen often in our daily life. It is important to our society because finding a true friend is really difficult to find. True friendship is hard to find now in days because we expect many things in return from other people.
