“The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton is a young adult fiction about two rival gangs. One of the rival gangs is from the East and the other from the West side. Social classes and territory are what divide the rival gangs, which causes the conflict in text. The protagonist is Ponyboy Curtis and the book is narrated from his point of view. The setting take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old greaser, walked alone from a Paul Newman movie, and was jumped by the Socials or the Socs who are one of the rival gangs who own the West Side. The Greasers saved him, which led to the introduction to fellow greasers who are part of the gang Ponyboy is in. The gang members include Ponyboy's older brothers Sodapop Curtis also known as Soda who is the middle brother between Ponyboy's oldest brother Darry who is in charge of the gang. After them there is Keith Matthews also known as Two-Bit because he is always making wisecracks, then there is Johnny Cade who is known as the pet of the gang or the little brother. As the two chilled there a blue mustang, which belong to, a group of Socs pulled up and in it were 5 Socs whom 2 of them were Randy and Bob who were Cherry and Marcia boyfriends. The two of them were the leaders of the group and were drunk at the time so they came to confront Johnny and Ponyboy. They were talking about them to not talk to their girlfriends and not being able to get their own kind. After that it led to mean remarks like “you know what a greaser is? White trash with long hair” which led to the Socs trying to drown Ponyboy. Johnny killed Bob. Dallas The book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is about two gangs who did not like each other in the hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the middle of the 1960s. The theme of the book is growing up and learning about life. One character who stands out in the story is Dallas because he comes from the poor side of town. He is a static character.
Dally finally gets bored of teasing them and go gets food for himself. Ponyboy, Johnny and the girls start having conversations about their gangs. So now the girls need a ride and their boyfriends(which are socs) sees them walking with greasers and they get out and fuss a little and the girls get in the car and drive off. Johnny and Ponyboy stay out a little longer and the socs return. Johnny and Ponyboy where getting jumped and one of the greasers were drowning Ponyboy to death.
Throughout the novel, there is a constant struggle for power between the two gangs resulting in many injuries and a few deaths. The main character, Ponyboy, also experienced near-death a few times. He is a greaser who lives with his two brothers, Darry and Sodapop, and has several friends who him and his brothers are very close with, including Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny. The mutual loyalty that Ponyboy’s friends and family shared with each other, ended up saving Pony’s life multiple times.
In chapter two, they attend the drive in and end up meeting two nice soc girls named Cherry and Marcia. Dally isn't too good with the ladies and he ends up with a coke in his face. The greasers learn that not all socs are piracy stuck up rich kids. Chapter 3, Johnny and Two Bit walk Cherry and Marcia home when they are almost caught by their boyfriends, Randy and Bob. They got off the hook without any trouble.
He initially sees all Socs as being toxic and reckless as well as uncivilized until the night when he, Johnny, and Dally who are other greasers that go to the drive-in movie theater where they encounter the Socs. Ponyboy also interacts with Cherry for the first time there. Him and her leave to chit chat as they leave to grab snacks. Throughout the conversation with Cherry, Pony realizes that there is more in life than just the Socs and greasers After getting to know her better, he learns that the Socs are also real people and they’re not just stuck-up snobs driving in Mustangs wearing slick jackets and Madras shirts. Cherry tells Pony that even people like the Socs have problems.
The rest of the gang consists of Steve, Two-Bit, Johnny, and Dally. They have a rough time getting by. Johnny’s family hates him and Dally doesn’t care about anything. But when Johnny suddenly kills a Soc, things start to change. Pony’s world is turned upside down.
Ponyboy, a greaser, was one of the young boys that was matured throughout the book because of his hardships. Ponyboy 's relationship with his older brothers, Darry and Sodapop, is a key factor in how Ponyboy matured throughout the book. An example of Ponyboy almost maturing from the influence of Darry and Sodapop, is when their parents were killed in a car crash. When their Parents died it caused them to get closer and look out for eachother more (#3).
Ponyboy’s vs the Socs The fiction book the,”The Outsiders,” by S.E. Hilton tells the reader about the ongoing fighting between the west side and the east side in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1965. Hilton writes about a young greaser or east sider and his family fight against the Socs or West siders. In the novel you see ponyboy’s view of the Socs and how it evolves from the beginning of the book to the end.
This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. No longer then a few minutes later Ponyboy went running to Jonny and telling him that they were running away. After Jonny finally calmed Ponyboy down, he got it out of him that Darry had hit him. Ponyboy told Jonny that he could go home after he cooled down. As they were walking to the park nearby, they noticed the same car they had seen previously that night when they got caught by a couple of Soc's trying to walk their girls home after they had ditched their boyfriends after they were drinking. As the guys pulled up and got out of their car, Ponyboy noticed that they were drunk.
They then introduced themselves and said that their names were Cherry Valance and Marcia. After that had happened Two-Bit decided to scare Pony and Johnny so after that they had all agreed that the Johnny Pony and Two-Bit were going to walk Cherry and Marcia to their houses they then are stopped by their boyfriends and so then they go with them and the Socs leave. Two-Bit had then said good-bye and Johnny and Pony went to Johnny’s house and heard their parents fighting so they then run off to the lot and fall asleep It is now two in the morning and Darry was furious and so they got in a fight and then Darry hits Pony and then after that Johnny and Pony run away then get jumped by the gang of Socs and all of the sudden Johnny kills one of them and they run to Dally and Dally tells them to go to the abandoned church until the cops stop searching. After that Dally visits them and takes them to DQ and when they get back there is a fire at the church and there were kids in their so Johnny and Pony decide to go in to save them and Johnny sudden gets hit by a piece of flaming wood and he ends up in the hospital and then it starts a rumble with the Socs and Greasers and then moments later Johnny is dead and Dally couldn’t take it
Ponyboy’s parents died in a car crash leaving his oldest brother Darrel also known as Darry to take care of his two younger brothers. The middle brother Sodapop is always trying to keep Darry and Ponyboy from fighting. Darry has become more of a parent figure in in Ponyboys life causing a lot of tension between the two. Some of the other main characters are Johnny, Two-Bit, Dallas, and Steve. They are all Greasres and are coincided a gang but just think of each other as friends.
