George Washington By Benji George Washington (February 22, 1732 to December 14, 1799) was a military general and the first president of the United States of America. His military career started when he was 21 in 1753. He was sent to Ohio during the French and Indian war to protect British land. When the French took over Fort Necessity he helped to get the fort back. On June 15, 1775 Washington became commander of the Continental Army. On Christmas night 1776 Washington crossed the Delaware river. In 1781 he helped to plan the battle that led to the British defeat at Yorktown, Virginia and the overall defeat of the British army.
