Martha Washington is known as the first, first lady of the United States of America. Before becoming first lady Martha had a very interesting life. Martha was the wife to George Washington the first president. Her life was very hard but she didn’t let that bring her down. Martha Washington was very influential because her early life was not easy, she was a kind and helpful first lady, and had difficulty later in her life. Martha Washington’s life was not easy. Martha was born June 2, 1731, in New Kent County, Virginia. Martha’s great grandfather immigrated from England to the colonies in 1633. His name was Reverend Rowland Jones. When George signed the Declaration of Independance Martha was actually in Philadelphia. She was the first lady for nine years. On March 4,1797 John Adams took over Georges’ presidency. Martha stopped being first lady that same day. Two years later George Washington died on December 14, 1799. Martha was so sad she didn 't even attend his funeral. Before Martha died she burned all the letters George would send her except for two. Then she got very sick and died May 22,1802. Martha’s face appeared on a U.S. postage stamp in 1902. The White House is actually where Martha and Daniel’s plantation was. Martha was very generous and kind,and deserves to be remembered

In the beginning she may have been trying to clear her husband’s name but ended up really trying to make a change. Miriam would not only be remembered as a first lady but as a governor also which is so important to women of Texas. On January 6th, 1759, Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis, a “charming and vivacious” young woman from the Tidewater area of Virginia. Martha brought enormous wealth, along with two small children, “Jacky” and “Patsy,” to the marriage. It was her second marriage, as it was his first. About two weeks after the battle at Yorktown, Washington’s stepson, John Parke Custis (“Jacky”), died of camp fever at the age of 27. His sister Patsy had died of epileptic seizure eight years earlier as a teenager.

She just yelled at him and told him how spoiled he was. In the movie Mrs. Medlock got mad at Mary for constantly going to see Colin and disobeying her. She locked Mary in her room to punish her, but Mary found a secret door to get to Colin, and they went outside with Dickon to the secret garden. In the book Martha’s mother came to help with the children and was like a mother towards them. In the Movie she never appeared once, they only mentioned her when she gave Mary the skipping rope.

It opened a door that that couldn’t be shut to other first ladies like Sarah Polk and Abigail Filmer. Both first ladies helped their husband significantly. Sarah Polk used her education to write speeches and letters to people for her husband.
Abigail Adams was a very intriguing woman who is best known as being the wife of the second president of the United States, and mother to the sixth president. She was a very compelling and courageous woman who had a strong sense of dignity that she believed all women should have. Abigail was an unofficial advisor to her husband before, during, and after his time as a president. Because of her beliefs and his support, Abigail was able to view herself as an individual and respected intellect at a time when women were not thought of highly in society. Though others often overshadowed her, I believe Abigail Adams truly is one of the most important women in history.

Abigail Adams played a very important role in the American Revolution; even if she didn’t fight in the war. Abigail fought for women’s rights and slavery instead. Her perseverance pulled her through rough times, as well as her stubbornness. Abigail Adams was an independent woman and a fantastic role model. Abigail Adams was born on November 11th, 1744, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and grew up with no formal education.
The foreshadowing in the story shows there was a hard decision to make between the teachers, in order for Martha to get the jacket. An example of this in the text is, “ I was almost back at my classroom door when I heard voices raised in anger as if in some sort of argument. I stopped. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, I just hesitated, not knowing what to do” (107). The arguing between the teachers shows that there is going to be an issue with her receiving the jacket.
Abigail Adams was extremely influential to the nation’s beginnings due to her drive to push certain decisions and debates through the status of her husband. She found the issues of women’s rights and slavery while also finding local politics to be important. As the wife of a president, Abigail Adams was able to use her status in a way to push and bring to life her political agenda. Abigail Adams was able to provide her husband with information and insights of the political situation in Boston during his decade long trip through numerous letters that had been exchanged for so long. Her letters regarding the political situation “included commentary on the American struggle for independence and the political structure of the new republic.”
Martha died in 1782 and Mrs. Hemings became close friends
