George Washington played an important role in the development of the United States. Washington was one of the founding fathers of the United States. He was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the oldest of six children. In 1743, Washington’s father died and shortly after his death Washington moved in to live with his half-brother, Lawrence. Washington was home- schooled and from Lawrence, he learned math and surveying and cultivated a taste for ethics, novels, music, and the theater. From 1775 to `1778 Washington served as the general of the Continental army during the American Revolution War, and then served as the first president of the United States. George Washington’s presidency had a great effect on the future government, as well as on America’s actions at the time. He made some great decisions, whereas some others might not have been the best for our country at the time. An example of one of the greatest decision Washington made was signing the proclamation of neutrality. During the fight to gain independence from Great Britain, France helped the U.S gain independence from Britain in return to be helped the same. In 1789 the French Revolution broke out during Washington first term. The United States then had to decide if she was going to help France or stay out of it. In the cabinet, Thomas Jefferson opposed any expression of neutrality while Alexander Hamilton supported it. Washington eventually sided with Hamilton and issued a proclamation of neutrality that banded American ships from supplying war material to either side.
