Since obtaining my master’s degree I often ask myself what will be my next career path. Will I continue to further my education or focus on other aspects of my life? As I continue to grow in my professional career, I have obtain valuable skills and knowledge to succeed in the public health field. However, the drive to immerse myself in higher education and receive more leadership opportunities are goals that I have not met. Therefore, I would like to continue my education in the same field, by applying for The Doctor of Public Health (Dr. P.H) in Health and Policy Leadership program, at Loma Linda University School of Public Health. Prior to entering a public health program, my initial goal was to study psychology in order to understand human …show more content…
I always assumed that someone’s health could only be treated by a doctor. Nonetheless, as my education flourished I soon realized that programs that focus on preventing adverse health outcomes could reduce the incidence of disease. Furthermore, public health provided the opportunity to develop prevention programs to assist those who suffered from mental illness. To learn this was not only exciting, it provided a break in the current gap of mental health prevention programs currently being offered in my county’s school districts. I soon became passionate about conducting research to understand the association of mental illness on students. Researching other studies would eventually aid to design other programs that were culturally tailored to specific …show more content…
P.H. program at Loma Linda University, will enhance my leadership skills and become proficient on health policies. It is evident that the nation’s health is greatly influenced by health policies and this program will improve my decision making skills. Moreover, the institution values such as integrity, justice, and humility convinced me that this program shares the same values that I was raised with. Compared to other institutions, I’ve never attended a campus that was faith based and Loma Linda offers me the opportunity to mold me into a leader that implements its value to professional practice. If I am accepted in your program I hope to conduct research that focus on mental illness among youth. Through research I hope to learn how to implement stricter policies to help children who suffer from bullying and reduce adverse health outcomes attached to
From a very young age, I have been interested in studying psychology; I watched psychological movies discussing various mental illnesses, created multiple extra credit projects examining abnormalities that occur during development, and interned and volunteered at collaborative schools and adult social groups. I have been able to explore the diverse perspectives in the field of psychology. It was not until college when I was able to take my first psychology course that I knew working in this field was the perfect fit for me. Taking more classes has given me the opportunity to see what field of psychology I want to further engage myself in. My course, Practicum in Human Services, directly places me into the field of work.
One in five people in America suffer from a form of a mental health disorder (Mental health). Many people, especially children, develop severe mental illnesses which are usually left untreated for a very long time. Mental illness is becoming more and more common in today’s society. With more younger kids becoming vulnerable to possible mental health disorders, schools should be taking note. Schools in the United States should require mental health screenings; mental health problems can start very early on in life, school violence could be prevented, and suicide rates could go down.
I decided to learn more about psychology, and surprisingly discovered a topic that combines both my major and my topic, Christian, N. (2015) What is psychology? What are the branches of psychology? called 'Health Psychology', which observes how health can be influenced by behavior, biology and social context. I also noticed that there were multiple fields of study in Psychology, when before I thought there was only a main one, turns out there are many more such as Educational, Forensic and even Sports psychology.
This has led to many falling into a downwards spiral of worsening mental health, ultimately leading to an increase in substance abuse and suicide rates. Studying at the University of Sheffield will equip me with a vast array of skills, allowing me to work to the best of my abilities to provide my peers with top healthcare and battle the stigmas surrounding mental health to ensure more people seek help as soon as they can. I wish to use the expertise I gain to educate the public on how mental health conditions aren’t something to ever be ashamed of.
Introduction: Any organization recognizes the significance of leadership and its crucial role in achieving their goals and success. In healthcare organizations, the complexity of the system and the difference in defining its success goals are reshaping the practice of leadership and its standards. According to House et al. (2002, p.5) a leader is able to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the success of the organization or task. Healthcare and business settings are different in terms of goals and system contexts.
School Antibullying Efforts: Advice for Education Policymakers Introduction The government of the United States Of America Has found bullying to be such a wide spread serious issue that jurisdictions have been set up that require schools to have an bullying prevention program. In the article “School Antibullying Efforts: Advice for Education Policymakers”, (Nickerson, 2013), summarizes the research that has been done on the effective prevention and intervention practices to help and stop bullying. Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
Mental health plays a huge role in the everyday lives of people and their physical health. While some think that mental health services are not important, should not be provided to many, and should not be available in schools, mental health care should be available to all who need it for free and be available in schools. Free mental health can help those struggling and the public be aware of the issues, help those get the help they need, protect the individual and
Though I have been interested in psychology since high school, I came into graduate school not quite knowing where I would fit in the field. However, I quickly found my niche in my first clinical practicum which involved working with minority, homeless families in a low-income Los Angeles neighborhood. There I discovered that I could combine psychological training with my passion for social issues like poverty, diversity, and advocacy. I have been fortunate to have a number of supervisors, professors, and colleagues help me continue to foster this passion into a professional identity. With their guidance, I have been increasingly able to utilize a holistic approach to clinical work.
The money collected from the tickets of the first charity concert I was part of as a musician was donated to an institution for adults suffering of mental disorders and related learning disabilities. It was my first exposure to such unique human behaviour; their evident inner purity despite their condition touched me. I witnessed schizophrenia and depression within my family so I knew that growing up I wanted to delve deep into discovering all details about how our nervous system works, pursuing a career in research to uncover our brain's possibly limitless potential. I aspire to become a clinical neuropsychologist and develop innovative treatment through applying my research findings practically.

Health classes should take more of an initiative to put out the idea of mental health awareness and why it's important. At Pickerington High School North, a health class credit is mandatory for all students to to graduate. In this class, mental illness was talked about for a week or two total and mainly focused on the most over commonly known illnesses. For example, depression, anxiety, and anorexia. They didn’t even touch base on the The spectrum needs to be broadened.
Kids who bully should be helped understand the impact of their actions. For example kids will stop bullying others if they talk about
Once I discovered that my interests were in the field of Psychology, there was no turning back. As a result, I decided to go to college to gain more knowledge of the subject. I was exposed to the different fields of psychology, but the few I enjoyed the most were social, abnormal, and learning and motivation. These subjects presented accurate knowledge about subjects that
