When people think of a hero, a tall buff male with supernatural strength who beats up villains comes to mind. But not all heroes are like that. Superman, Mahatma Gandhi, Veronika Scott, and Ponyboy Curtis are all heroes. Superman is the only hero that fits that category. Superman is an archetypical hero, a hero in books and movies that fights villains with supernatural powers. Mahatma Gandhi is a historical hero, a hero that made a huge impact in the past to better the world by breaking unfair laws. Veronika Scott is an everyday hero, an ordinary person who becomes a hero by doing one or two extraordinary deeds. Dallas Winston is an unlikely hero, a person who becomes a hero by accident and doesn’t want to be one. Even though they are different …show more content…
Everyone has a hero that they look up to and sometimes even expect the hero to save them when they are in trouble. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, writer and lecturer, once said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (BrainyQuote). That is what heroes are for; the service of the people. A hero needs to fight the evil that troubles the people. This is another purpose of the hero. To fulfill these two purposes, heroes must have particular traits. A hero must be compassionate to others. Some heroes are even compassionate to their enemies. Without compassion, a hero can’t help other people. Heroes are also brave when facing the evil. If they aren’t brave then heroes can’t stand up for what is right. Persistence is another trait that heroes must have. They must persist when facing obstacles because the obstacles prepare heroes for the final battle against evil. Having these traits, any person or animal who fulfills the two purposes of a hero can be called …show more content…
The police is like that. Even though they help people with compassion and fight evil with bravery and persistence but that is there duty. It is their primary duty to protect people and property. To do this they must have the traits of a hero and fulfil the purposes of a hero. But they are obliged to do so. It is written in their oath, “I will always have the courage to hold myself” (IACP). This tells us that must the police must show bravery and persistence even in the worst situation. It also says that, “I will never betray… the public trust” (IACP). This shows us that they must keep a good relationship with the public and that asks for compassion. Firemen are a similar case. They rescue our kittens and fight fire with bravery and persistence with compassion. But like the police, they aren’t heroes either. Firemen have a pledge they take. It has many variations, but the gist of it is that a fireman must “demonstrate concern for others, a willingness to help those in need and the courage to perform the job 's duties. It also requires the firefighter to ‘serve unselfishly’…” (Decker). Without these oaths, the police and firemen wouldn’t be obliged to act like a hero. But a true hero acts like one even if they aren’t forced
Heroes put others before themselves and will do anything to ensure that thing’s safety. Many people have either risked their lives or have loss their lives due to trying to save others. An example of this would be the man in the red bandana or Welles Crowther. Crowther was working in the twin towers as planes were crashing into them. Crowther could have ran away from the other people when the planes hit, but he chose not to spare himself, but to save others and sacrifice his own life.
Sure, I got time The Websters dictionary defines a hero as someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Heroes are ordinary people who find the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. They are the real heroes, and so are the families and friends who have stood by them. Maya Angelou stated, “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this world a better place for all people.”
When asked to describe a hero, Mickey Mantle, famous baseball player for the New York Yankees, Said “Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them” This quote shows that a hero is someone who always does the right thing and has good intentions. What a hero should look like now is someone who is loyal and brave. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus proves that he is a hero when he went to save his men on “Circe’s Island.” and defeated the cyclops in “The Cave of the Cyclops.”
Heros’ come in many shapes and forms. Tall, short, small, big, anyone can be a hero, they just have to put in the effort. Though anyone can be a good hero, a great hero is somebody who inspires others, makes a difference, and is selfless. First and foremost, a great hero must be someone who inspires others. Ida B. Wells is an example of a true hero.
Those people give up their time and hard earned money to help others who are less fortunate. They may not wear a uniform or cape, instead they wear regular clothes, proving to the world that anyone can be a hero. In order to be
Most heroes are determined and courageous. Frederick Douglass once said, “I remained firm...reaching new york without any interruption(SB 71).” Which meant that he was determined to spread the word to the world about slavery and no one could stop him from doing so. Also, another hero Odysseus showed determination and courage when he blinded the cyclops to get out of the cave. “We took the red hot stake and twisted it round and round like that in his eye(SB 33).”
Hero’s are great and powerful people. A Hero is someone who is willing to risk their life to help someone even though they don’t have to. Ponyboy is an example of a hero. Johnny is also a great example of a Hero. Bob though, is the complete opposite of a Hero.
A hero is anyone who makes the right decision to sacrifice for a person in need. For example, without heroes like firemen, wildfires and house fires would spread across the nation, costing lives and loss of worldly possessions. Firemen stand strong, risk themselves, and protect all for the well-being, safety of others, and personal property. In addition,
The police officer 's authority role, is to “fight crimes, maintain order and provide social services”
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
Being a hero is not only about saving people and risking your life for others, but it is much more. A hero is admired for his outstanding courage and continuous achievements and someone worthy of our praise. However, heroes are not only those things. Heroes have fear, even if they overcome them, and those fears allow the hero to grow confidence and become better. All heroes are very smart and cunning and can work themselves around anything and everything with the best end in mind.
A career in policing requires an individual to meet a high standard for character and demonstrated behavior, in order to be developed into an effective officer. Succeeding in a police academy requires the candidate to display and apply integrity, a skill which must be developed before receiving admission. Integrity demonstrated through a police officer’s personal life, provides the foundation for a respected career. When presented with the opportunity to leverage a peace officer’s position for personal profit, an individual who has previously made selfless choices, is more reliable for operating within the law. Integrity as a term has the social implication of following ones beliefs, regardless of the opposition.
There are various approaches to describing a hero. There is also an infinite number of individuals who can be defined as heroes. A hero can be a person who demonstrates valor. A hero can be a champion. A hero can even save a life or even mankind.
“If you can tell me who your heroes are, I can tell you how you are going to turn out. It is really important to have the right heroes.” – Warren Buffet. Many people are looking for heroes in wrong places, and misunderstanding the term hero itself. Strength, bravery, courage, and honesty are the things most people think when the name hero pops.
To me, a hero is someone who gives everything they have to assure the happiness of others and a hero is also someone who gives up his life or her life so someone else could live. In all honesty, a hero isn’t really what we think a “hero” is based on definitions and what the movies or even comic books have told us. Anyone can be
