During the 1950's the United States and other members of SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) joined forces with south Vietnam to prevent communism from taking control. In 1954 the country was split in half forming communist north Vietnam and non-communist south Vietnam when they won their independence. The communist supporters in south Vietnam were called Vietcong's and they tried to take over the south Vietnam government which soon got backed by north Vietnam causing a war to begin. The countries in SEATO especially the U.S feared that communism would take over, so President John F. Kennedy sent Military advisors to south Vietnam in 1962 to help train the south Vietnamese army. Johnson's presidency began and ended with tragedy, Johnson came into command of the country after the death of a popular young president and provided much needed continuity and stability since Kennedy was just assassinated in Dallas three weeks after the president of south Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem and his advisor and powerful brother Ngo Dinh Nhu were brutally murdered. Johnson passed an abundance of amount of legislations, with it protecting the nations water, land, air space, quality of life, the people, and the great wilderness. The goal of passing the legislations were to keep the country safe while the war was getting worse. The news broadcasted Johnson just like they did with Kennedy just because he followed in Kennedy’s footsteps in a way and wanted to make America safer. President Johnson's extended the beneficial New Deal of Franklin Roosevelt, including aid to education, Headstart, Medicare, and Medicaid important programs that are still significant in which many people value today. At the beginning, it was great propaganda to go fight to make sure communism from taking over and preventing another red scare. Then every big news channel and big tv shows started to show the war on live television so the people could feel involved and know what’s going on. Eventually once the war took a sharp right turn and got gruesome the media lost focus on the other things happening and focused more on the casualties of both Americans and Vietnamese. Once all of that got aired on tv the war became unpopular and the people didn’t want to see it anymore, they wanted peace and the fighting to stop in return caused the protests and everybody coming together. This in return caused the withdraw of American troops and the decrease in aid to south Vietnam. During Vietnam war our presidents JFK, Johnson, and Nixon all had the positives and negatives. JFK was a man of the country and wanted to stop the spread of communism but was assassinated so he couldn’t fulfill his promises. Johnson gave the people many benefits like Medicare, more protection to the homeland, and keeping people out of poverty but he also created a counterrevolution which caused some to unalike him. Nixon on the other hand had many of supporters because of him withdrawing troops from Vietnam but once the Watergate Scandal came around he lost a lot of that support and resigned from office.
