Richard Nixon is the 37th president of the United States and a very controversial one at that. President Nixon was best known for his biggest failures as a result of how bad they were. Nixon had been connected to the Watergate Scandal. It was several burglars who had been arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in Washington, D.C.The prowlers had been connected to President Nixon’s reelection campaign where they had been stealing important documents. Nixon aggressively took action in order to cover the crime. This really affected Americans to question their leaders. In 1971, Nixon prompted the situation with OPEC by removing the United States from the gold standard. This affected the US because countries could no longer redeem the U.S. dollars in their foreign …show more content…
In 1973, Nixon signed into law the Endangered Species Act. The goal was to prevent the extinction of animal and plant life. It was also to eliminate threats towards them. Vietnamization was a strategy that helped reduce American involvement in the Vietnam war by transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam. President Nixon really believed in his Vietnamization strategy, which was to build South Vietnam’s armed forces and withdrawing U.S. troops. He believed that it would prepare the South Vietnamese to act in their own defense against a North Vietnamese takeover and allow the US troops to leave Vietnam with its honor intact. Nixon visiting china was a way for Nixon to normalize relations with the communist People’s Republic of China (PRC) by traveling to Beijing for a week of talks. Due to the Watergate Scandal, on August 9, 1974, he resigned before almost being impeached out of office. After his resignation, Gerald Ford came in the picture. Detente was a French word that meant a release from tension. The pardon for nixon was a pardon that was issued in September 8, 1974, by president Gerald
Being the thirty-seventh president of the United States in 1974, President Richard Nixon was involved in a scandal known as the “Watergate Scandal”, that eventually led to the replacement of presidency from vice president at the time, Gerald Ford. Both Nixon and Ford believed Ford taking over the position of the president was the best decision as Nixon was never charged with the crimes from the “The Watergate Scandal”. Emotional responses from the people were also a key factor to accept as Ford took over the president position, and overall Nixon and Ford had to work together to figure out the prime decision regarding the nation. President Nixon was always attempting to do what is best for the nation. However, after the entire “Watergate Scandal”,
United States Vs. Nixon Richard Nixon was the United States president from 1969 to 1973. After his first term, Nixon ran for reelection and won by a landslide. How he won this election, though, is what took him to the Supreme Court.
Foreign policy wise, Nixon, while still in office, began to follow Realpolitik, a policy that allowed him to create relationships with both the Soviet Union and China because it no longer required morality to be a considering factor. This change in foreign policy caused concern for Americans because of the fear of communism.
Nixon wanted to end the war just like every other American. He had many plans for this war and one of them was called Vietnamization. Vietnamization was a policy that would replace U.S. troops with South Vietnamese troops and supply them with supplies and weapons (Rubel 182). It was a way to retreat U.S. troops and end involvement in the war. Even though he ended involvement in the Vietnam War by withdrawing U.S. troops, he decided to bomb enemy forces in Cambodia (Lillegard 71).
Nixon then announced a military invasion into Cambodia, where areas of communist sanctuaries were helping North Vietnam and Viet Cong. Afterwards, he went to China, where he ended a decade’s worth of feud between the Sino-American
Richard Nixon was the 37th U.S President from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974 and during his term, President Nixon would become one of the most talked about administration. This was due to the Watergate scandal; this would heavily over shadow his other accomplishments and bring the White House under the microscope. Nixon would tap phones and record conversations of people when he would have meetings. He did end the war in Vietnam and improved our relationships with China and the USSR. One of his objections in the United States was to try and bridge the divide in our cities and try to heal the war weary people of our nation, because of all the disagreements over Vietnam.
There are many theories connecting current and past presidents to imperial presidencies. The definition of an imperial presidency is a president who drifts from the written rules of the constitution. The various remarks and opinions accusing presidents of being imperialistic are generally from these who are conservative. This shows the occasional biasness that people occasionally show. There are many presidents who have perhaps taken their powers too far; Richard Nixon, Harry Truman, and Theodore Roosevelt were all accused of various imperialistic acts.
Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States and currently the only president to have resigned from office. From 1969 to 1974 Nixon held office after a new wave of conservatism due to the College students marches that consequently turned into riots over anti-war Vietnam sentiment. Furthermore the Democratic Party split due to polarization over the involvement of the United States in the war. According to The Enduring Vision President Nixon had a tendency to be paranoid and fearful of any political opponent; including an “enemies list” where he kept all political opponents in check.
In general I would say Richard Nixon was a fairly decent president. During a time where there were many protests amongst the American public (especially the youth) against the troops in Vietnam, Nixon was able to pull the troops out of the war. Nixon also reduced the tensions with the Soviet Union, and helped China join the United Nations. He also helped decrease the amount of racial discrimination by segregating schools in the south. It is a shame though, that those achievements of his are not acknowledged because of the Watergate Scandal.
Nixon issued a policy of Vietnamization, which he hoped would decrease the need for American troops in Vietnam. However, this did not limit the war nor end the anti-war sentiment at home. Nixon, hoping to end North Vietnamese supply lines, launched American troops into the neutral Cambodia. This failed, and in the end brought widespread massacres and destabilized the region. As the war escalated, so did protests on college campuses.
Richard Nixon’s Impact on the Environment The thirty-seventh president of the United States of America, Richard Milhous Nixon. Many people in the United States have their own opinion on this president. Some would say that President Nixon was a great president who did many things to help his country. Other might call him a crook.
He gives a one sentence statement of resignation, and becomes the first president to resign from being President of the United States. Nixon gives a resignation speech in which he states, “I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation.” {PBS, 1974)[6] After his resignation, the nation was somewhat divided. The presidency was handed over to Gerald Ford, who was serving as the Vice President.
The feeling of wariness for those in politics was not always existent; although only three presidents have faced impeachment charger, only one president has left office. Richard Nixon was the thirty seventh president of the United States, a man in the public eye for many years as both a U.S. representative and Senator (“Richard”), well educated and around sixty when he resigned from the position as president. On the evening of August 8, 1974, Nixon delivered his resignation speech over a public broadcast from his Oval Office to the people of the United States. The former president gave this speech to inform the nation of the upcoming changing president; he also voiced his hopes for the country in future affairs, especially the foreign policies
Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States; he resigned as president after his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. People broke into the Watergate building to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. Nixon knew about the break in before hand and tried to cover it up. When people found out about him trying to cover it up, he decided to resign as president. He gave his speech on August 8th 1974 and resigned on the 9th.
He increased the number of forces in South Vietnam. The war escalated then he decided to not run for reelection. Nixon used the war to his advantage. He promised to find a way to end the Vietnam War, pledging America would have “peace with honor”. Now he had to uphold this promise and implement a plan, but it didn’t work.
