Macbeth’s thoughts on life do impact his downfall. In Act V, Scene V, Macbeth finds out about Lady Macbeth killing herself, he says “She should have died hereafter; / there would have been a time for such a word” (20-21). Although Macbeth says this he appears not to be deeply saddened by his wife dying. Macbeth only cares about winning the war and mentions how she should have died anyway. He is consumed by power, rather than love and humanity. In Act V, Scene Viii, Macduff challenges Macbeth to fight because he killed his family, he is looking for revenge, but Macbeth refuses and does not want to fight him because he is not of woman born, so he fears he will kill him, Macbeth says, “I will not fight thee” (26). Macbeth starts out being an excellent warrior in the battles that he is fighting in for the good. He is spilling blood over the right reasons and in doing so he earned the title of Thane of Cawdor. However, this all begins to change once he and Banquo, his right hand man in battle, meet the three witches and they get their prophecies told to them. This begins the downfall of Macbeth, causing corruption, greed, and guilt coming from the actions after the prophecies are told to them. This happens many times throughout the plot some changes were made by force, through the manipulation of his wife. Others are from the power getting to his head. Through these developments you can see Macbeth go from coward to killer to demise.
At the beginning of the play Macbeth fights Macdonwald due to an act of violence. Macbeth states, “Till he unscam’d him from the nave to th’ chops, and fix’d his head upon our battles' (1.2.16). It’s casting his winnings with violence and it’s decreasing his morality as an “epic hero.” Derek Cohen proclaims that “Macbeth inhabits every moment of violence in the play; He is restless as well; a destructive spirit who fills the conscious world of the play.
