Paper jams happen every day, and what happens to paper? The paper is crumbled, gutted, and cast away as if it has no purpose. While a piece of paper and a human are different; both are still neglected once they longer fit in line. John Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice And Men" illustrates the real life problem of people in America and Africa who mistreatment the mentally disable in favor of spending less money and time.
In fact, in “Of Mice and Men” the character Lennie shows how the mentally ill are treated and viewed. “I go get my shotgun. I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts. “Of course, Curley is referring how he will get his gun, and kill Lennie before he knows all the facts. This shows how the mental ill are viewed as a problem, and the only solution is a quick fix. “He backup until he was against the wall, and Curley followed, slugging him in the face. Lennie’s hand remained at his sides; he was too frightened to defend himself.” Furthermore, Curley Pushes Lennie into a corner. While in the corner, and repeatedly smacked Lennie kept his hands down. John Steinbeck shows how the mental ill are treated, and the issue is mirrored in

According to Rick Callahan“12.1 percent of Americans surveyed in 1996 perceived people with mental illnesses as ``violent, dangerous, frightening.'' With this quote we can see one of the reasons for the mistreatment of the mentally ill. Since, it’s easier to fear what is not known, than to try to understand. Clare Nullis says “Up to 70 percent of epileptics could be seizure free if treated with simple, inexpensive anti-convulsants.” While the pills may be inexpensive, but the U.S will have to pay more for a less profit. The mentally ill are misinformed, mislead, and mistreated in the U.S, so more money will be made for less time. However, the U.S isn’t the only country who’s mentally ill are mistreated like in “Of Mice and
In John Steinbeck’s 1930’s classic novella, Of Mice and Men, we are introduced to one of the main characters, Lennie Small. Lennie is developed as a mentally handicapped, who doesn’t know his strengths and weaknesses, who forgets everything, and who acts like a child. By this development, Steinbeck dehumanizes Lennie in order to show the mentally handicapped population has no chance of achieving the American Dream. Lennie doesn’t know his strengths and weakness, and how to control his strengths. At the end of chapter five, Curley’s wife comes into the barn, where Lennie is alone.
Due to this quality, Curley especially hates Lennie because of his large size and wants to fight him after any sign of provocation, causing multiple problems for Lennie and George. Curley is the main
In life, people must sometimes make tough choices for the greater good to make sure others don't suffer and the piece continues. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinback, people see him explore this concept by constantly showing the characters in his story making sacrifices to do what is best for them and for the workers of the ranch. Steinback's story of mice and men takes place in 1930s America a time of the great depression when people could barely make a living and were living paycheck to paycheck. In the story readers meet George and Lennie, Lennie is a very strong man but has an intellectual disability that makes his intelligence must less than that of his peers. This gets him in trouble with many of the characters of the ranch they
In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck a lot of innocent characters that suffer at the hand of another. One character from the story that suffer is Candy. The way Candy suffers is not being able to do a lot of things and when his dog got shot. For example, when Carson took his dog out behind the barn and shot him in the head. Another example is when Candy lost his hand and can not do a lot of stuff.
Character Mental Illnesses Imagine being on the run working as a Laborers and having a partner, not like any other, big and strong, but has the mind of a child. In the story Of Mice and Men there are two main characters, George and Lennie. Lennie suffers from Autism from my diagnoses that will be further explained later. George suffers from depression from a screening I ran.
In my first argument ‘Of Mice and Men’, Steinbeck expresses the theme of suffering through the character Lennie. Lennie is depicted as having mental impairments, he has a body of a big strong man but has a mind of a child that has
In Of Mice and Men, a tragic social novella by John Steinbeck, that takes place in Salinas Valley, California during The Great Depression, we follow two great friends as they travel looking for work. George and Lennie, migrant workers, who work on a ranch to pursue their American Dream. While working on the ranch, they face many challenges such as loneliness, death, sorrow and violence that are a result of inequality created systemic racism, misogyny, ableism and ageism. Throughout this story we see Lennie, who is cared for by George, accidentally kills mice, a puppy, and Curley’s wife due to his disability that causes him to behave like a child with uncontrollable Herculean strength. In this tragic novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, society in this case is most to blame for Lennie’s death for the reason being of how society viewed disabled people and how it allowed the mistreatment.
How would you feel if someone you knew had a mental disability and depended on you for everything? John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men centers around two men living in California who work in fields bucking barley in what is assumed to be the 1920’s. Lennie has a mental disability and depends on his companion George for almost everything. Although George gives guidance to Lennie and tries to help him live a normal and happy life, George is more of an angry tyrant to Lennie. To begin, George can be called temperamental because he is often found getting mad with Lennie and yelling at him as if he is a child.
Over the course of the novel, John Steinbeck, carefully crafts his rhetoric so that it shapes the public to “[have] its sympathies turned towards the perpetrator” in the case of Of Mice and Men the story paints a picture “that is sympathetic to autistic filicide” and shows George “overwhelmed by Lennie” and depicts “murder as an act of mercy” (“Is Lennie a Monster?”). Of Mice and Men also demonstrates a negative tone towards people with mental disabilities when it tries to justify the murder of Lennie at the hands of George. This shows how people thought of people suffering from autism and other intellectual disabilities at the time and evokes a strong emotional response from the reader. Overall, In the story Of
Disability is defined as a condition that restricts a person physically and/or mentally. In the John Steinbeck novel, of Mice and Men, Lennie suffers from this. He is mentally disabled. This forms the story’s conflict. Lennie tries to be in line with society however, his disability makes it much harder, especially in the time period that this story takes place in.
You know, i have always wondered how people can deal with living or taking care of mentally disabled people. When you take care of a mentally disabled person, you have to constantly watch them and you have to give them your all, and i don't think i could take care of a mentally disabled person for a day! Well, in a book called “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, a small but intelligent person called George has to take care of a huge mentally disabled person called Lennie, and Lennie surprisingly loves cute little bunnies! I think that George and Lennie have a great friendship and they care for each other, one example would be right at the beginning of the book where Lennie proceeds to drink lake water and George tells him to not drink it and says "Lennie. You gonna be sick like you was last night."
The Disfunction of the Elderly John Steinbeck, the author of the novela Of Mice and Men develops many characters throughout his novella including the character of candy. The novella tracks the man of George and Lenny, Lenny being a mentally handicapped man and George his caregiver, as they go to a job site and find a old man. This old man, Candy, is portrayed in such a way that demonstrates that the elderly and handicapped are a disfunction to society and will never truly achieve the idea of the American dream. A person can have a major purpose in their life, they can be living their live to the fullest with a solid income, but this can all die with the snap of a finger. Once a person has reached their purpose in life they are useless; they have no reason to continue.
The argument is made that Lennie’s inability to control himself is what cause the death of Curley’s wife and even his own death. However, throughout the book the reader can see Lennie can control himself it is only when he is put into situations that give him pleasure, like petting soft things such as hair, that he acts incorrectly. In chapter five the book states “‘... But mine is soft and fine. ‘Course I brush it a lot.
In the book “Of mice and men”there are a few characters with impairments. They are not hard to notice some physical some mental. One of the characters Lennie (one of thew main characters)has a mental impairment. The reader can tell this because in the book it states”Well, he seen this girl in a red dress. A dumb bastard like he is, he wants to touch everything he likes.
Lennie looked blankly at him. ‘Huh?’ Then Curley’s rage exploded. ”(Steinbeck 62) Curley fights people for no apparent reason, and this time it came back to bite him.
