1. It is the symbolism of the green light across the way as it pertains to Gatsbys reaching out to something better or something that he wishes to have. To him it represents a need in which he cannot obtain even with his vast wealth, friends and family. Even with all this there is still something missing. Something important. 2. When Gatsby and Daisy first met it was awkward and uncomfortable. They didn't know what to say to each other and filled the room with casual eye contact avoiding conversation at times. This was not because they didn't like each other. It is because the wanted interaction between them but did not know how to achieve it. 3. The valley of ashes is where the ashes are dumped after large heaps of material are burned. It is a wasteland of sorts and is very dirty and unwanted. It looks similar to a fictional fallout type world. It portrays the lower class area and while in the valley of ash you notice the poverty that exist there. The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg can be seen on a billboard looking over the haunting area. I believe the symbolism represents the tougher locations of the world. It is stated "where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke" meaning quite literally that the entire land is covered by ash and soute. Making it a tarnished area as well as a unhealthy …show more content…
Gatsby wants things to go back to how they were five years ago. Before the commotion. He wants her to leave Tom and pick up where they left off before he disappeared. 5. Nick sees Gatsby with his past greatly interrupting his present. He is haunted by the idea of being with Daisy. Gatsby believes that what he needs to do is reach a state that he was in the past. That him and Daisy both were. He believes this too saying "Cant repeat the past? While of course you can" Chapter 7 1. Gatsby along driving with daisy back from the city striking and killing Myrtle. Wilson the mechanics wife. Daisy was driving the automobile when the events transpired. This is a major plot point in the turning of the story because it effects the outcome later in the story. 2. Gatsby stops his parties because he is to busy with his chase after Daisy. In the beginning the reason he held the parties was to get close to Daisy. But with his progress he feels he should continue to try to win her over in any other way possible. 3. Tom realised Daisies love for Gatsby when they are dining together and they keep eye contact with each other for most of the time. They are absolutely into each other and it is now clear to Tom that this is the
1. Gatsby has large and rapid mode swings for example, he “literally growled” and immediately after “without…exultation” radiated “ a new-well being”, which suggests he is emotionally unstable (95). 2.Gatsby gives off mixes signals, for he implies he wants alone time with Daisy when he looks between Nick and her with “tense unhappy eyes”, although when Nick leaves, giving the pair some privacy, Gatsby follows him sharing that he thinks, “[the meeting] is a mistake” (85). 3. The “faint flow of thunder”, which is present outside while Gatsby is meeting with Daisy, foreshadows flow of the pair’s relationship; where many small events will lead to a large burst of pent up emotion, just like thunder is the precursor to a storm.
Gatsby wanted the old past that he used to have with Daisy and was looking for that old spark but it wasn't there anymore. “I ventured. YOu can’t repeat the past .” (Gatsby 149). Gatsby spent his whole life trying to get the feeling he used to have with Daisy but no matter how much he wanted he couldn’t/ wouldn’t get the same feeling he onced felt.
It represents the poor lower class, poverty, and hopelessness. It symbolizes the plight of the poor and their unfortunate situations. George Wilson, for example, is a character who loses his vitality and a man who comes out of the gray world of ashy pollution and factory dust. The people of the lower class who inhibit this region all want to leave but cannot, we can see this from the fact that Myrtle was so desperate and ambitious and that she hopes Tom would be her ticket out of this miserable life.
Firstly, The Great Gatsby proves the corruption of the American Dream through the green light. The green light symbolizes the American Dream; specifically society’s desire for wealth. The fact that the green light ‘coincidentally’ “burns ... at the end of [Daisy’s] dock” (Fitzgerald 92), suggests that Daisy really is only the face behind Gatsby’s pursuit of wealth.
The valley of ashes is a representation of the moral and social decay that results from an individual’s quest for wealth. Throughout the novel, the rich people of East and West Egg indulge themselves with nothing but selfish pursuits. The valley of ashes successfully symbolizes the plight of the poor for people like George Wilson. Fitzgerald’s integration of the valley of ashes allows him to portray the effects social classes can have on society. This allows him to successfully enhance the quality of his
Seeking revenge for the death of his wife, the grief-stricken man is directed to Gatsby’s home after the Buchanans blame him (160-162). Violence ensues; Wilson murders the doomed millionaire before turning the gun on himself. The loss of Myrtle signifies more than just the death of his spouse; it marks the destruction of
He also feels that he can fix everything to the way it once was and since he’s gotten with Daisy before he can do it again. In reality though it’s been five years since they were together and the both of them have changed a ton. Daisy moved on from Gatsby while he continued to think about her and has stayed living in the
Therefore the light in which Gatsby reaches for shows the want to have his American Dream
[Gatsby] cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!”(110) As Gatsby truly believed that he was no longer James Gatz, he believed that Daisy still loved him and was the same from five years ago. But the truth of the matter is that Daisy had once truly loved him and she isn't the same as she was the years before, and there is nothing Gatsby can do to repeat the past and end up with the happy ending he dreamed of where “after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house—just as if it were five years ago.”
Gatsby’s dreams and aspirations in life are rather interesting and amazing as he goes about his life in the book. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald helps highlight the social, moral, and political issue that were very present during the 1920’s and today. Gatsby is the focus of the book as before the book began, he was an ex-soldier who came to wealth by some rather illegal ways. Daisy a married woman is his person of interest, who was his ex-lover 5 years before the book started. Gatsby’s actions, and words demonstrate a clear obsession with Daisy that seems to have no end.
He wants everything to be perfect as if the arrangement was not planned at all and just a coincidence. Gatsby is so fixated with Daisy to the point that he has all these great parties to hopefully see her one day. Not only this, but he made it his priority to find someone who is friends with Daisy so he drags them into his plan. Gatsby’s dedication to his tactics is unhealthy since he has not moved on and thinks that Daisy is his true love.
The emphasis refers to foreshadowing what will take place in the hotel room. Heat is compared with anger and passion; similarly, it foreshadows the emotions which will be shown by Tom and Gatsby. Gatsby wants to forget the past, and her child is living proof for the five years. More so, it shows that Daisy had possibly had feelings for Tom at one point.
Girls have always wished for a prince charming: that’s Gatsby. Gatsby is like the sprinkles to an ice cream, bright and colorful, like a lion who protects who he loves, and like a hungry eagle that doesn’t stop chasing what it wants. Jay Gatsby shows love and loyalty by making everything he does beneficial for himself and the ones he really cares about. He admits who he was and where he came from, but he did whatever it took to have the future he wanted with his love, Daisy. He is perhaps not loyal to many, but he is loyal to himself and the goals he wants to accomplish.
Rationale: According to English B higher, I studied Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby”. In order to establish my interpretation of the novel, I decided to write a letter as my written assignment. The task requires to depict the theme of the novel which is the noble deterioration in the upper class society.
