Emergent self-knowledge of personal writing influences how approaches will be taken to develop writing skills in students. Utilisation of a writer’s journal enables emerging writers to understand relationships between the purpose of a journal activity and the intended audience (Bishop, 1996, p.34). Acknowledgement of self-emergence as a writer enables the author to include additional information into their work for clarity of the text, therefore enhancing that knowledge attained, ensuring the writer understands the importance of skills associated with writing polished pieces of writing.
It is important for educators to have a refined understanding of language and how it works. Research shows the more understanding an educator has on developing writing skills in their students, the task involved will become less complicated, resulting in meaningful learning experiences for students (Loane & Muir, 2017, p. xviii). Therefore, it is essential that both educators and emerging writers maintain a level of environmental awareness as this will provide opportunities to describe, wonder about, investigate and celebrate their very existence.

To develop writing skills, educators must include model text for students, when in collaboration with peers, to understand the format they are expected to replicate. The analysis of modelled material must focus on reading the model, creating an impression of the meaning of the model, and collaborating with others to create a written text similar to the model (Loane & Muir, 2017, p.xvix). Educators must ensure they allow time on a daily basis for students to work on their writing skills. Doing so at different times each day encourages students to reflect upon previous models and discussions, forging new ways of creating their own version of the
“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
The article by Donald Murray entitled, “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts” provides readers a better understanding of the writing process and argues that writers learn to write, by writing and rewriting. Murray also contends that writers must learn to be their own best enemy. Well, I believe I have this trait covered! I will confess, that I purposely saved this course for last, due to the number of years between my last structured learning experience and returning to school to complete a BSN degree.
According to Yale University, environmental education fails to keep pace with environmental degradation and prompts action, causing societal consumption and destruction. On the other hand, Alyssa Abel believes that the next generation to become resilient individuals aware of the importance of environmental responsibilities is crucial. Marine conservationist Charles Saylan believes the U.S. educational system needs to produce citizens who follow the law and regard themselves as protecting the environment. Charles Saylan states that “educators need to go beyond rhetoric and make environmental values a central part of a public education” (Nijhuis). Alyssa Abel, an established education blogger in new learning methodologies, believes that society requires eco-innovation and a sustainable emphasis more than ever, given the current state of the environment.
My feelings toward writing aren 't good nor bad. Writing is something i have had difficulty with in my past. I have no problem brainstorming ideas on what topics to write my assignments on, even if i am given a prompt, but I do have difficulty with sitting down and planning my work. I always find myself getting stuck. So I almost never take the time out to plan out my ideas i come up with.
Writing is an essential part of an individual’s success. Writing comes in many forms, and it is not only used in an English course. It can be an email to a college professor, a resume, a lab report, a hotel review, etc. There are countless forms are writing, and it is important to understand how to approach each piece of writing. Writing is part of an individual’s daily life, and understanding the importance of rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, and audience awareness with make it easier to approach different types of writing, and ultimately improve one’s writing skills.
Williams’s article is written in a subjective viewpoint. His audience for this particular journal entry is towards other educators, as he himself is also a writing professor at a university. Because of the author’s educational background, he can use his own experiences to address issues with teaching methodology in writing. Williams begins his article with a quote from an unidentified individual whom he met at a conference: “I’m not so sure that an academic journal should be focusing so much on identity when what we’re supposed to be doing is teaching academic literacy” (710). With this introduction, Williams is able to address the common stigma he has come across throughout his career as a writing educator.
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
Writing is a vital part of life. Before the creation of written language human communication was limited to verbal, in-person conversations. Everything changed when writing allowed thoughts and ideas to travel farther and more efficient than ever before. Writing is a talent that we learn at an early age and only hone as we proceed through our academic careers. This being said, as with any talent every writer has strengths and weaknesses.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
My first writing experience I can remember is from elementary school. I was in the 3rd grade and my librarian asked me to write her a short book because she used to hear me tell my friends stories. At first, I wondered why would she assigned me this hard task. I didn’t know what to write about. I went home and began looking for inspiration for my story.
This chapter gave me flashbacks of high school English classes. Looking back, I can see that my English teachers struggled to teach us and model the writing process.
Goal 1 What: to explore a variety of approaches and activities for developing and practicing writing skills with my learners. Help learners understand the differences between written and spoken language, genres and their functions, style and register, and other key aspects of writing they need to successfully pass the certification. Why: I often teach certification courses and I feel that my students are under-prepare for it. My students usually have problems with writing most of them would say that they hate writing. But, it is less about “hate” and more about a lack of preparation in the subject area.
Indeed, no citizen of the earth can afford to remain aloof from the issue related to the environment. It is therefore, essentially important that the study of the environment becomes an integral part of the education process. Environmental education increases public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues or problems.
