I have chosen to write a review of the movie “I am Sam” because it is a powerful, emotional film about love, the family bonds, and parenting challenges. The main character, Sam, lived in Los Angeles, CA in the 1990s. Sam has the mental capacity of seven years old, he works at Starbucks and has a daughter with a homeless woman who abandoned them after she gave birth to his daughter. Sam is an avid Beatles fan and named his daughter Lucy Diamond after the Beatles song. Sam’s mental impairments are autistic tendencies and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Sam’s moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder interferes with social and occupational activities and only when he is surrounded by his “mentally challenged” friends or people who he trusts, then his anxiety level decreases. He deals with life his way by following an established routine dictated by his OCD, and any changes to this routine cause to Sam a lot of stress. Affect of Mental Illness on the relationships Sam is a single parent to his daughter Lucy. Despite his mental disabilities and limited knowledge of parenting, I think he gives all his best to his daughter with unconditional love. He says to Lucy, “Love is all you need.” He is a responsible father who seeks parenting advice from agoraphobic Annie, a lady friend, who lives one building over. Kind Annie tries to …show more content…
The comorbid condition that Sam experienced is the obsessive-compulsive disorder, a type of anxiety disorder. This condition made him behave in reparative and compulsive ways to deal with thoughts that he did not want but could not get out of his head. I have noticed that when Sam is thinking, he looks up and he also has fine hand tremors that make him play with own fingers; he can speak fluently, but awkward and sometimes inappropriate, which are signs and symptoms of a mild case of

In the book My Brother Sam is dead, a boy named Tim tells about his family’s life during the Revolutionary War. He lived in a town that was very loyal to King George. His biggest problem though was that his father was a loyalist and his brother, Sam, was joining the war to fight against the British. Who is right? Sam is.

The manner of perception demonstrated by the director, Lasse Hallström, of “What Eating Gilbert Grape?” is established towards people with mental disability but specifically autism. Arnie Grape who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio is a 17 year old boy with autism and shares everything with his older brother and carer Gilbert Grape who was played by Johnny Depp. Arnie elucidates basic behavioural and social aspects that a person with autism would have. Hallstrom interprets a person with autism as a minority by clearly separating the town of Endora, Iowa from not just Arnie but the entire Grape family. The media manages to incorrectly interpret the behaviour, social acceptance and understanding of people with a disability and this movie directly

He shows random acts of kindness to strangers his father remains cautious of. He seeks to understand why the gangs are ‘bad’ and believes that deep down, they too are loving. The mother did an unspeakable act that seems cruel at most looks, but to her, she was proving her love to her son, trying to give him a better life. The power of love will always transcend after death, and that is why love will always exist in a broken
Sam did wrong leaving his family and his home for a silly war. Sam betrayed his family leaving. He was pronounced a trader. Plus, he let death follow his absence. Life did the right thing trying to get Sam to stay.

I am Sam is a film about a man named Sam Dawson (Sean Penn) who has a mental disability that constrains his mental capacity to that of a seven-year-old. He has a seven-year-old daughter named Lucy (Dakota Fanning) who turns eight in the middle of the movie, causing a catalyst of events that lead to Sam losing custody. In the film, Sam has a strict routine that he must adhere to or else his whole schedule gets off track. He does not like change and cannot or will not adapt to it easily. This was best illustrated when Lucy wants to go to a new dinner instead of going to IHOP, their regular Wednesday outing.
