Having a structure in a workplace establishes communication skills, defuses conflicts, and also provides awareness of leaders who are in charge of you. Be aware of who is above you in your hierarchy structure. It helps avoid going outside of your chain of command and to eliminate any potential obstacles you may come into contact with. If at any time you feel your current leadership is not helpful or causing more problems than usual, you should ask to be lead by someone else who better suits you. The Army defines leadership as “Influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization.” Douglas McCarther says "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015). All in all chain of command is a system put in place to keep a well balanced and functional structure within any organization. It should be used only when necessary. It also creates an efficient and effective way of reporting any problems you may have. Always communicate with your leadership by using the proper channels. Ignoring the chain of command can affect the morale of the overall organization. Once the morale is damaged it's hard to regain it back as well as trust. Using the proper channels can alleviate this problem from occurring. In order to maintain a good relationship in the workplace, everyone must be open and honest with each other as well. The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps’ mission statement is to, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” JROTC prepares young men to have leadership and to have benefits in their citizenship. As per the Army Doctrine Publication 6-22, “Toxic leadership is a combination of self-centered attitudes, motivations, and behaviors that have adverse effects on subordinates, the organization, and mission performance. This leader lacks concern for others and the climate of the organization, which leads to short- and long-term negative effects”. One would think that leadership gets better as you move up in rank in the military but I have a different take. I think is something that needs to be address in an educational manner. Regardless of the rank of the individual, soldiers in the military must complete a series of training before gaining their military occupation specialty and their rank.
As a Field Grade Warrant Officer, why should you analyze and be familiar with organizational communication processes and methodologies?
