While reading James Baldwin's Notes of A Native Son the reader witnesses a series of finely structured sentences. The most moving perhaps, is the final sentence of the penultimate paragraph where in which Baldwin states: "Hatred,which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man that hated and this was an immutable law" This quote acts a thesis for the entire essay, in one perspective it speaks on the destruction of his father's body while on his death bed. The extreme hubris and stubborn attitude held for much of the father's life, which drove so many people away, was eradicated when he was overcome with sickness.
