Did insanity change the course of history? In Candice Millard’s Destiny of the Republic she explained the course of Garfield’s presidency, what he accomplished, the assassination attempt made by Guiteau, and how the country was affected by his death. Candice Millard’s portrayal of James Garfield was very interesting because it was factual and informative, intriguing, and historically accurate. Candice Millard had a very factual portrayal of James Garfield's presidency. The 20th president was forgotten and not spoke about much because of the 6 months he served and by reading this book you can learn more about Garfield than any history site can offer you. The facts which Millard included might have been seen as unnecessary, but all the facts which were included were necessary and important to the story of Garfield’s presidency. It addressed the wound Garfield had in his lower left back and “what was perhaps as stunning to the doctors as the location of the bullet was the infection that had ravaged through Garfield’s body”(268 Millard). The first chapter in the book grabs the reader's attention immediately by talking about an invention that changed the world today but it also talked about, Garfield and introduced him as a wise nobleman. This would grab a reader’s attention of the reader because they would want to find out more about Garfield and who he was as a person and what Bells part in the story was. Millard also explained Bell as a man who will “ no longer be known as a teacher or simply an inventor, but the creator of the telephone”( Millard 15). Not only was this intriguing the readers this was giving the readers a small historical moment which would hook them to that specific character causing the reader to follow them throughout the story.
