Google is a search engine that most people depends on. It made the lives of every people, especially students, easier. With just a simple click of the “enter” button, anything you want to know has an answer. It is an advantage for this generation to have Google, it made researching faster. It was made to help the lives of people and not to harm it. It is observable that this generation misused Google. Instead of using it as an advantage it became this generation’s disadvantage.
Many have become too dependent in using Google. As a human being, we are given a brain that is made to function. But with what is happening right now, Google has become an “alternative brain”. For example, student would simply
In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicolas Carr analyzes the dramatic affects that technologies have been having on our brains. The short summary, the Net is making us all mindless zombies in Carr’s mind, but he is not the only who feels that way. His long dragged out article is abundantly full of meaning examples, personal opinions, and hard facts on the drastic changes the Net has done to our brains. Carr starts his articles with the death of super computer, HAL, from the movie A Space Odyssey.
Writer, Nicolas Carr, in his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, expresses the search engine Google is effecting the human mind. Carr’s purpose is to covey his idea that the web changes the way humans think. He creates a pessimistic tone to his audience that spending a lot of time on the internet is bad for the mind. I don’t believe Carr made an effective argument on this article because of the tone he used, the references he provided, and how the article was laid out. Carr begins his article to the readers by acknowledging the web is messing with his brain and he is not thinking the way he used to.
In “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” Nicholas Carr argues that Google is deteriorating the human mind. He mentions that people no longer want or even need to deeply read information and retain it because the particular information that they are looking for can just be Googled. In fact, he argues against this by stating that everything is not available on Google, and things that are available on Google are not necessarily true. Another con of this, he states, is that it is extremely difficult to read off of a computer screen. Carr argues that people’s brains are not programmed to read something in depth if it is off of a computer or phone screen.
Within Is Google Making Us Stupid? By Nicholas Carr, the rhetorical devices that Carr uses allows for deep meaning to develop in the text. It also evokes emotions within the reader which makes him or her question if the internet is actually making him or her stupid. Carr also uses the different devices to persuade the audiences that the internet is actually more harm than beneficial. By using the devices he is able to make the reader rethink what he or she has thought before and question his or her thoughts.
Google is changing the way we perceive, process and interpret about different things. “I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading… Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do.(Carr 313)”

However, with this article, Carr is bringing us to a whole new perspective on how the popular search engine, “Google”, is affecting our learning/intelligence. We, as individuals, are letting “Google” perform our own learning for us, creating a slow downfall in American intelligence. First off, Carr is an extremely credible author in that he is most known for being elected to the Encyclopedia Britannica’s editorial board of advisors in 2008 and was a graduate of Harvard University (Comley 609).
