The character Jaques in Shakespeare’s As You Like It says “All the world's a stage,/ and all the men and women merely players;/ They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts...” This universally known phrase continues to ring true in today’s society. The presence of drama in the classroom has countless significant benefits. It helps students develop a deeper understanding of the past and present while improving their empathy skills, boosts their confidence/self-esteem, and improves their ability to collaborate with other people. On top of this, a direct correlation has been proven between improved grades and attendance records. In 2013, a kindergarten teacher by the name of James Wade lead an activity with his students that exemplified what is known as social-emotional learning. In the activity, the students were asked to voluntarily explain a problem they were experiencing in their lives. A young boy expressed his belief that his mother did not like him because she often yelled at him for playing with her iphone too much. The students worked together with the teacher to come up with a solution to the problem by acting out the situation. The teacher played as the boy’s mother, and the boy told her that he did not like it when she yelled at him. The mother/teacher then apologized, and the boy accepted the apology. They claim these programs waste classroom time that could be utilized for more practical activities and studies. The U.S. Department of Education evaluated seven different programs in 2010, and reported that they did not find any evidence of increased academic performance or decreased behavior issues. This study can be criticized because the programs that were evaluated are among the handful of programs that were poorly designed and/or initiated. A far more significant number of studies that have been replicated and proven valid should have been used during the evaluation process
