John Brown was very important in some ways. He tried to free slaves from Southern states but, he did it wrongfully. John Brown was a very mean and violent man. Yes, he was trying to free slaves but he was doing it the wrong way. He also went against the United States Government, by not using his representatives and protesting violently. So when he got hanged on December 2, 1859, his actions were justified. To start, John Brown was very violent, he used violence to reach his goals, which included a deadly raid where he killed two innocent people in Kansas Territory, by his actions this raid got the name of “Bleeding Kansas.” In the document: “John Brown- A Radical Murderer” it states that “ By 1859, Brown had a plan for reaching his goal of defeating slavery through Violence. He planned to use guns and other weapons that he captured at Harper’s Ferry to arm Virginian slaves.” This is showing that instead of using his representatives to help free slaves in Congress, but instead he used violence. Then John Brown went to a proslavery town October 16, 1859 and killed five settlers with twenty-one men with him on another raid. The raids John Brown went on was an act of terrorism. …show more content…
According to the document “John Brown- A Radical Murderer” it states that “ Most northern anti-slavery groups did not agree with John Brown's raid. [...] It was started by Northern abolitionists. It was an act that forced Southern state legislatures to pass emergency action.” So then the South needed to prepare for fights in the future with the Northerns. Also, William Lloyd Garrison was a leader for anti-slavery movement but called the Harpers raid a “misguided” and “insane” act. So in this article it proves that yes, John brown was trying to free slaves yet, he was doing it
Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).
Treason, the act betraying one’s country or attempt to overthrow the government. John Brown did no such thing as a peaceful approach would gain nothing. Document B: Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown; Although the plan to attack a Federal Arsenal was “a measure to be fatal” according to Frederick Douglass. Despite the fact of taking the peculiar measures to end slavery, Brown still went through with his plans. When Brown and his men were either killed or captured people had mixed thoughts and feelings toward them.
In my opinion during the 1800’s, John Brown was considered a hero. He was raised in a religious household and fought for what he believed in, which was all men should be treated equal. Brown was born in Connecticut, but was raised in Ohio and learned early-on in life to hate slavery. His upbringing gave him the courage to develop a plan to create an army that would arm slaves with weapons with would eventually end slavery. His goal was to attract slaves as he moved along to the Appalachian Mountains, until slavery could no longer support the system of bondage.
Some might say that he was fighting for freedom, therefore he was a freedom fighter and his actions were called for because it was for a good cause. But someone who is really religious knows that murdering is wrong no matter what they believe in or what their opinions. John Brown murdered innocent civilians because they did not join him in his thinking and beliefs. He wanted to become a martyr and that is what he did. He was captured and died for his cause; if you look at modern terrorism that is what happens to most modern day
John Brown’s Raid was the effort by John Brown to initiate a slave revolt, and his first objective was to arm slaves by trying to take over the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry. John Brown and twenty other men who joined him, including three of his sons and about fourteen African-Americans, went into the town of Harpers Ferry. Brown split up the group into the two, this proved to be the biggest mistake of the whole operation, with one group going to capture Colonel Lewis Washington along with other hostages. The main group, led by John Brown, intercepted a train in hope that slaves in the next town would hear about the rebellion and join it, but no slaves heard about it. After intercepting the train, the group went on to seize the armory in Harpers Ferry.
John Brown said before being hung,“(I) Never intended murder, treason, or destruction of property or the excite or incite the slave to rebellion or make insurrection.” During 1857, John Brown, an abolitionist, was raising money to help abolish slavery in the South, also to get an uprising of the slaves and to create a rebellion. The main plan of the raid was to get the slaves to join his rebellion, but it failed as a raid. Even though it failed as a raid it created a greater divide between the North and South. The last words of Brown were given to a guard before his hanging and those words were, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.”
The raid was a failure because Brown didn't get the help of the slaves the he wanted and he had no rations or escape route, so the whole plan was basically doomed. Local militia and citizens attacked brown and his men until troops under Robert E. Lee came from washington and arrested Brown. Brown was sentenced to death on December 2nd, Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Brown will make the gallows as glorious as the cross. As Brown was going to be hanged he handed the guard a note that said “I John Brown , am certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” Even though the raid was a failure, it made even more tension between the north and the south, which fueled the beginning of the civil
He killed many of the raiders and captured Brown. Furthermore, John Brown was placed on trial for treason and was ultimately hanged on December 2nd, 1859. (Boyer. “On the Brink of War”). Right before Brown’s execution, he handed his guard a slip that read, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.”
He saw the wrong in owning slaves. He believed what he was doing and what he believed in was right not wrong. He was hung with the pleasure of knowing he made an impact on the world. John Brown tried very hard to do anything to please god and free slaves.
Then in 1855 he travels to Kansas disguised as a Free-Soiler with his sons and in May 24th, 1856 he ordered his men to brutally kill five proslavery believers. This event riled up the abolitionists and sent a message to the Southern states. According to document B “Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown” John Brown is a hero because he was willing to give his life in order to hijack the armory in Virginia and help the slaves revolt against slavery by using those weapons. For example it states, “He thought that the capture of Harper’s Ferry would serve as notice to the slaves that their friends had come, and as a trumpet to rally them.” “…Convinced me that he was going into a perfect steel-trap, and that once in he would never get out alive.”
Lee, came and ended the failed raid. The soldiers captured Brown and he was later hung for treason on December 2, 1859. As a terrorist to the south and a martyr in the north Brown’s actions, although brutal, brought attention to the slave conflict in the states sparking controversy. John Brown’s plan was unsuccessful, but for the fight against slavery, his actions called for a change. Ultimately John Brown was a martyr for the cause of abolition because through shocking the nation, being fuel for abolition, and showing how divided America was, he drew attention to the violence of slavery which enabled others to make a choice whether to push for a change in the African American community or continue mistreating the lives of innocent people.
Brown was attempted by the condition of Virginia for injustice and murder, and discovered liable on November 2.The 59-year-old abolitionist went to the scaffold on December 2, 1859. Before brown was about to be executed he gave a guard a piece of paper that said “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with
This wasn't his first violent act and it definitely wasn't his last. He started by devising a plan against Virginia and wanted to go after the Blue Ridge Mountains and start a war against the people there. John also created his own constitution where he changed the way he wanted the states to be run and all slave owners wouldn't be able to keep their property and had to free their slaves. Although this constitution didn’t go into law it changed the way other people viewed what should be done about slaves and allowed John Brown to engage in more violent acts with a reasonable cause. At the time his followers saw him as a legend and thought every action he did was pure and
“They then took my husband away…A lady who saw my husband’s body, said that there was a gash in his head and in his side; others said that he was cut in the throat twice.” (Source 10) John Brown was an abolitionist during the period known as “Bleeding Kansas”. Meaning he wanted to abolish slavery. He went to great extents to try and stop slavery, even murder. It is argued that John Brown is either a hero or a villain.
George Fitzhugh claimed that "The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest the freest people in the world." (Document H). John Brown a major person in the fight to end slavery "led a band of 18 men into Virginia to seize the federal arsenal there, distribute the captured arms to slaves in the area, and create a general slave uprising."
