Freedom is a type of living that everyone in the world would appreciate having. Some people live in a communist country or a country where freedom do not exist and everything is controlled by the government. With many rules and regulations proposed by the government, people feel that it takes away from their freedoms. Nonetheless, America was established upon freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. People want to live this way along with protection from danger. In today’s turbulent society, freedom and protection can co-exist because freedom is our natural right which indicates our right to have protection from danger. People should not have to choose which is of greater importance because both are factors that contribute to our living …show more content…
Brown wanted to help those who were in slavery to fight for their freedom. Brown stated to Onion, “I ain’t master to you, Onion, you just as free as the birds run”. (29). Despite John Brown being a free man, he was assisting Onion and the others who were not free to become free. With John Brown being a white man, it showed that Onion and other slaves were not escaping for freedom in a sense; however, they all were in danger. Negroes that were living in the Kansas territory at the time were required to have a specific documentation that indicated them being in slavery or some sort. Otherwise, they were asked questions until the right answers were given. In a sense, Onion and the other slaves were fighting for freedom and still were not protected from possible dangers they can encounter. Freedom and protection is complementary to one another because protection assures a safe freedom. Both need to co-exist in a society that operates in an ordered fashion like the United …show more content…
Security. Robb states, “Security is actually a prerequisite for freedom. In classical liberal political philosophy, providing security and the rule of law so that individuals can exercise freedom is the very purpose of government”. The United States government acquired a lot of power after 9/11 which makes the country not the land of the free, but the land of the confined. There has been more surveillance cameras put into place and monitoring of phone calls which confines the rights of citizens. Violating the right of privacy is also a crime. All of the new adjustments made after the 9/11 attack nonetheless has yet to stop a terrorist attack from happening until it actually occurs and America wants to find a new and better way to solve it for next time. A country cannot operate without security, yet the citizens of that country need freedom which is why both need to
Recently the right to privacy has been severely threatened by the Patriot Act. The USA PATRIOT ACT, which was made a law on October 26, 2001 by president George W. Bush, let criminal investigators use whatever tools necessary to find terrorist attacks before they happened; USA PATRIOT ACT is short for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001". This was made a law in response to the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center in NYC on September 11, 2001. Law enforcement officials were given better resources to fight financial counterfeiting, smuggling and money laundering schemes that funded terrorists. The Patriot Act’s definition of terrorism also gave
More was Lost than Lives The day of the September 11 attacks was a terrible day that will be forever remembered. The attacks however did not only cost Americans their lives at the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and on those planes; the attacks also took Americans’ freedoms. Following the attacks the unconstitutional Patriot act was passed, the inconvenient and ineffective Transportation and Security Agency was formed, and the NSA’s mass surveillance program was increased. While all of these actions were done in order to protect Americans from terrorism they have only succeeded in denying Americans the very rights afforded to them in the United States Constitution.
Atticus decides to take the case in defending a black person, something nobody in the town would have done. Most of the residents of Maycomb do not believe in equality and have hatred towards black people. If an African-American is charged for committing a crime, he is automatically believed to be guilty because of their skin color. Atticus says, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (39). To clarify, Atticus took the case because he believes there is a chance of Tom being innocent.
In 2001 only a little over a month after 911 The Patriot Act was passed. On the surface the act seems to be concerned with the safety of the American people; however it was reactionary, a result of the culture of fear created by America’s first experience with terrorism, a word that still holds a powerful
Have you ever been watched every second of the day, even doing little things like going to the bathroom? Does someone constantly tell you what to do and how to do it? In the book 1984 this is how most of the people of Oceania lived. They are controlled by the “Big Brother” that nobody knows who are what it really is. In this society they go by three slogans and which says in the book, “FREEDOME IS SALVERY, WAR IS PEACE and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”.
Muslim Americans endured more government scrutiny after September 11, 2001. The United States government decided to monitor this population. This involves surveillance on phones, worship place and funds. The US government needed to pass a law to collect data to use concerning risks. Consequently, the Several days later after the 9/11 attack, the U.S. passed the USA PATRIOT Act which is an acronym for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism” (Stan, 2014).
The Patriot Act In post nine eleven America there was and still is a hysteria regarding terrorism. People were scared for their lives every time they went outside Bureaucrats and politicians were in a state of “fear” for themselves and their families. Politicians saw this as a time to do what they wanted in congress with terrorism as a cover story. This fear enacted many new bills and laws, but none were as controversial as the Patriot Act. From an observational standpoint this act was seen as any other to Americans in fear of terrorist acts.
Most recently, the “war on terror” has led to limitations on civil liberties. After the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, President George W. Bush authorized the PATRIOT Act. This act gave the government more power to conduct searches of suspected terrorists, detain and remove suspected terrorists, and place wiretaps on belongings of suspected terrorists. Edward Snowden, former computer specialist at the CIA and NSA, released about 1.7 million classified documents exposing a global surveillance project. Not only has the government been spying on suspected terrorists, but also the American people.
According to the dictionary, freedom is the power to determine action without restraint. Freedom for my generation in America is taken for granted. Having freedom is important because you aren’t forced into doing anything you don 't want to do, it makes life experiences enjoyable, you can be yourself and life 's more fun with freedom. America’s gift to my generation is freedom.
Civil liberties have been affected since the 9/11 events by the Patriot Act. According to N.A. (2003) “The Patriot Act decided to trade away certain civil liberties in exchange for what it hoped would be more security”. As said, the act meanwhile is concerned on providing effective security measures for people in the country, has encroached on freedoms. Like any restrictive law, it has been controversial. For example “many immigrants who had lived in the United States for decades have been rounded up and deported for minor visa violations, not for any connection to terrorism” stated N.A. (2003).
This shows the readers how grateful the friends and acquaintances of Tom Robinson are for Atticus defending him in court. The black people of Maycomb are tired of the racial discrimination and segregation in and are ecstatic to see progress being made. At the end of the service when we were all leaving, Reverend Sykes said to us, “We were ‘specially glad to have you all here,” said Reverend Sykes, “The Church has no better friend than your daddy” (Lee 163). To add to the this point, even though Atticus and Tom Robinson did not win the trial, the black citizens of Maycomb stood up out of respect to Atticus as he walked out of the courtroom.
You may be surprised by how some individuals feel angry and offended at others simply because of the pigment of their skin. These individuals let their hatred of those that are different from them control their actions to the point that they bring harm and malice upon these people. This piece of writing showcases that and also addresses how racism in Maycomb is viewed and how the people in Maycomb feel about those with different skin tones as well. There are those individuals that do not intend to be racist but the way that their society is programmed they unintentionally contribute to the racist population. The racism that occurs in To Kill A Mockingbird is very present and normalized.
The reason why the government supports security is because they had significant amounts of terrorism and they are just looking out for us. They main causes of terrorism are the 911, Boston bombing and there’s a lot more but that’s some that triggered the government to be looking out for use and also not having much trust in anyone. Security is very important but when it’s too much it’s no longer a protection but an invasion. But tell me what the point of having any of this if they don’t consider it as is. Freedom is to do whatever you want to do
Freedom! The dictionary says freedom is the condition of not being bound to restraints, or oppression. Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one desires. However, to me it means much more. To me freedom means having the ability to practice your own religion and to speak freely publicly or privately.
Freedom can be interpreted in many ways, if you look up freedom in the dictionary it will say: the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. My ancestors said, “America is freedom”, my little sister says, “freedom is all the ice cream and T.V. in the world.” For me I’m not sure yet what I think freedom is. What Freedom Means to Me is a difficult topic. The VFW Patriot’s
