What is the true purpose of school? School is often viewed as place where students learn and develop into well-rounded educated individuals. In the book, Dumbing Us Down, by John Taylor Gatto, the essay, “Against School,” by John Taylor Gatto, and as well as the documentary, The War on Kids, by Cevin Soling disagree with having schooling. I knowledge the positives outcomes with the school system, but overall I disagree with the school due to the aforementioned articles and the
In the case of Brooks vs. Northwood Little League has little relevance to my profession as a future sports psychologist. Overall I do not think I will be in this exact situation but I can take some learning opportunities from this case. I learned in my case that anyone can be sued for negligence but you have to prove the four elements of negligence in order to win. In my case of Brooks vs. Northwood Little League, Brooks sued for negligence and lost her case. Brooks lost this case because she couldn’t prove all four parts of negligence.
Gatto is a far left libertarian who believe that schools are harmful to American society, yet he doesn’t provide substantial evidence in order to argue his point. In his article, he goes out of his way to show how bad public schools are, but only uses his personal experience instead of actual facts to back up his points. Throughout his whole article, he shows multiple mistakes that proves his opinion to be inconclusive. Gatto claims that schools are harmful to American society, yet he doesn’t provide substantial evidence in order to argue his point.

She also writes some tales to inform readers that in the US, students are interested and enjoy in sports more than other peers in other countries. For example, we learn how to talk to each other and communicate because everyone communicate differently. School also teach us how to talk to people, and meet new friends. The scent of hot dogs, the crack of the ball off the bat, and umpires hollering “strike” are just a few memories one will have after attending a baseball game. America’s game is filled with many sensory details, which is why it is so appealing to many spectators, as well as players. The massive fences in the outfield seem daunting up close; the players seem to whip the ball effortlessly, but with extraordinary speed. Spectator’s noses will be filled with baseball smells such as sunflowers seeds, which everyone seems to be chewing, or the perfume of fresh cut outfield grass. The home fans will be cheering with optimism despite the score.
School is a place where you go to spend about half of your life learning about topics that simply do not interest you or that truly won’t help you in the future. The U.S government tells the teachers what they need to teach in their schools for the class curriculums, so that the students can learn a healthy amount of material. The best thing is that many high schools fail to teach their students important things. Many teachers just pass students along through their class, because they don’t want to hold them back and deal with them for another year, but soon enough most of us move onto college. I’ve seen many people fail during college, because their high school did not push them to try to achieve great grades.

Mike Rose, in his excerpt from Why School?, questions the reliability of the educational system and its key focus on economic readiness. He states that schools stress the importance of economics, accountability, and compliance over previously sought over qualities like curiosity, intellect, and courage. Rose argues that education is spread mainly due to economic motivation; money motivates society more than dreams and desires. This economic focus is combined with assessments to calculate the number of students who do poorly in school and weed them out. Rose believes the economic motive merged with this assessment restricts what should be the main focus of school: development.
For a young baseball player one of the highest goals to achieve is hitting a homerun -for me that was all I wanted. I already achieved most of what I wanted in baseball, and one of my proudest was a no-hitter, but it was no home run. When I first realized how bad I wanted this feat was one night after a practice where all we did was just hit. The majority of my teammates hit at least one homerun that practice, but me I hit the fence but never was able to send one over. The car ride home after the practice was horrible, I was a mess.
What is school really trying to do with our lives? The article “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto is an article that talks about the problem of schools and how the goals are not what they say they are. He then talks about how school is not needed in its required class times, what the schools say the goals are for the students, and where our school system originated from.
INTRODUCTION In “Baseball Magic”, Gmelch explores how baseball players perform rituals in order to receive good luck during their tournament. Gmelch compares the rituals of American baseball players to those of the Trobriand Islanders. The baseball players use magic, specifically rituals, taboos and fetishes to control their fear of failure. These rituals are primarily focused on players who pitch or hit since their positions in the game allow one to score points for their team (1).
The article continued to mention that schools are a form of social control. Schools give children a place to be and are thought how to

Compulsory Education Most, if not all of us, are aware of the fact we are required to go to school-the reason behind this are the controversial compulsory education laws. There have many many different forms of compulsory education in past times. In the Roman societies it was expected of young people to study under someone who had an education. Whenever attending school became mandatory in the United States there was a lot of controversy. On one hand, you had people who loved the idea of their kids having to go to school for a set number of years and the state providing it.
It can teach you about the wrong and rights in this world and sometimes even teach you on how they affect and change us. It can also teach you on how we can all be the bigger person in some situations. A school system is also a place where most people feel safe and feel like they can express themselves. In fact, our education system isn’t actually broken, it is designed to create winners and losers. In college nowadays we have a lot of options on what we want to do.
