In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, the town of Salem, Massachusetts is overrun with hysteria because of children who accused many of the townspeople of witchcraft. One of the accused was a man named John Proctor. While he was a respected farmer and member of the community, he had committed adultery with one of the accusers, Abigail Williams. +++++ The townspeople only found this out when he was trying to clear the names of the accused. John Proctor can be seen as the hero of this play because he attempted to prove that the children were making false accusations to save his wife and learned to forgive himself, to accept the forgiveness of others, and that telling the truth is the best thing to do even when it may hurt your reputation.
