Is College For Everyone Eighteen-year-old Julie was told all her life that if she wanted to become successful then she would have to go to college. Julie knew she wanted to become a dental hygienist one day, her close family and friends continually told her that only through college she would become a successful person in her career choice. However Julie didn’t know if college was the right choice for her even though everyone expected Julie to go to college, she had multifold of doubts about it. Julie personally thought someone can become successful in more ways than just through a four-year degree. The debate whether everyone should go to college constantly spikes up in conversations. Plenty of people have the impression that the only way you …show more content…
For instance, training programs which can get done in two years at most if aiming for an associates degree or one year or less. It all depends on the area of work one wishes to do. Earlier I mentioned Julie and how she wanted to become a dental hygienist. If Julie didn’t go to college and instead chose to do a training program or a certification program of some sort, she would've accomplished her schooling in two years. Julie would earn a median salary of $70,210 right when she entered the working field (Dental Hygienist Career And Education Tracks p.4). In another article called How Much Does Dental Hygienist School Cost, it states the “ Medium: Associate's Degree Average $4,600” (p.1). This demonstrates that if you took the option of not going to college and instead did a certification program/training program it would take less time, save you money and reward you with a comfortable yearly pay. That brings me to my next point, usually with a four-year degree one would have to work up to achieve a higher pay. Take the average teacher for an example. In Oregon a teacher just beginning earns an average of $34,302 a year, a beginning teacher with a master’s degree earns $48,285 a year and as they progress their overall average of their yearly pay comes down to $57,321 (Teacher Salary Information, p.2). Compare the average pay of a teacher and the average pay of dental hygienist. The teacher probably went to college for four years, if not more and most likely paid an excessive amount of money depending on where he or she went to college, maybe around $31,000 because let’s just say he or she went to a private college. Now the teacher earns an average of $57,323 a year. Whereas the dental hygienist went through training programs / certification programs which took two years at a minimum and
Chris Matthew doesn't believe that college graduates Always make more than highschool graduates. He says that “the bottom quarter of earners with college degree don't make more than an average high school student.”(pg.2). Experts claim that even though the price of a college Education is rising. It pays off in the end. But Matthews disagrees with them.
Otherwise, if society was to continue on this path of engendering pharmacists, doctors, and dentists without curtailment, those fields will eventually “crash” and many graduates fresh out of school will be left with a degree on paper that will barely serve to contribute to their earnings and well-being. Somewhere and somehow, an equilibrium needs to exist between people aiming to become blue collar worker and other endeavoring to work as an allied health professional. Without the equilibrium, the job economy will be found to be in a precarious situation where any move could result in a recession. People who do not need to attend college should not enroll in college and should stop with a high school diploma because continuing further on will only help to put the economy on the precipice of stability and
Is college for everyone? This question that most high/college students have asked themselves some time in their life. Pharinet evaluates this notion in his blog posted in 2007 on AssociatedContent.com “Is College for Everyone” in which she uses her experience, logic, emotion and reasoning as a college professor to identify the issues and answer the question, “is college for everyone? Many individuals believe that obtaining a college degree is needed in order for success to be obtained.
First of all, college increases one’s annual income and salary. This is because higher paying jobs often require a college degree and only consider applicants who have one. According to the Bureau of labor statistics, workers with a Bachelor's degree earn a median of $1,326 a week meanwhile, workers with only a high school diploma earn an average of $668 a week. This proves that a college degree does make your wallet thicker and almost
The fact that not everyone needs to go to college is the main point that Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill write about in great detail throughout their essay. Even though the authors do say that people that go to college usually earn more, they state that this is on “average,” and that the key focus of their essay is to focus on those that the benefits are not greater than the cost of going to college. (Page 211, Paragraph 1). They also include a graph right under the text that shows how “on average” people with a college degree earn more than those that are just high school graduates. (Page 211, Figure one).
At (blog.uncollege.org) it says, “The cost of college has skyrocketed in recent years. Attending a decently ranked university can easily cost upwards of $100,000.” Some People thought of not spending money on college but to go skip and go straight forward into life. But what I’ve seen in the success of college, are things that you earn and get rewarded for and you live life way easier. There is more to it than just getting a great job and getting more money after you graduate from college.
College Isn’t for Everyone "By telling all young people that they should go to college no matter what, we are actually doing some of them a disservice" (Owen). This quote from “Brookings Paper: Is College a Good Investment” goes into detail about how college isn’t for everyone. By educators, parents, and authority figures telling graduating high school seniors that college is necessary, they are limiting the potential of that student’s true skills. College isn’t right for everyone and not everyone wants to go to college.
To begin with, going to college can help people gain greater wealth. In the article, “Five Ways Ed Pays,” its stated that “you can earn up to 22,000 more per year” (“Five Ways Ed Pays”). High school graduates will have a much harder time finding high paying jobs without a
The first reason is the rate of return on education. Owens states that “researchers have completed the best studies in regards to the salary difference between a high school and college graduates.” The researchers suggest that the raw earnings between a high school graduates and
Does the job the student wants require a degree? These are some of the many questions people ask when deciding where or if they should go to college. It is a depressing thought because college no longer the only option for higher education, but a business. A four year college is not for everyone. There are many jobs that do need a valid college degree, doctors being the first-rate example.
Why would anyone want to go to school for twenty to twenty-two years of his or her life just to graduate and have to go all over again? This is the question that many young people have asked themselves while going to college to become teachers whether it be for early childhood education, elementary education, high school education, or even college education. Many college students, or even high school students who go to college to determine what they want to do with their lives only look at one aspect of the career choice that they are looking at, and that aspect just so happens to be money. Even though teachers do not make the most amount of money, as say a doctor or an engineer, but they still make enough to make a good living off what they make.
So yes, college is a low value. But at the same time, numerous people believe that the value of college is kind of high because it improves certain aspects of their lives. For instance, in the short video 5 Ways Ed Pays it is mentioned that college graduates are less likely to be obese, 50% more likely to exercise, 66% more likely to read to their kids and take them to a live show, half as likely to be unemployed, and earn an average of 22k more per year than high school graduates. This is all true, but vocational schools also teaches you skills that you need in life and you move around a lot. Plus you still get paid and you do not have to pay back any student loans like some college graduates.
Why People Should Not Go to College People should not go to college because is difficult to find out what career choice as a result of the inexperience and little information, the potential loans are overwhelming, and the huge necessity to start working immediately after school. In fact, many high school students go to college because it is expected of them, but that is not a good reason to go. If the students are facing pressure from their parents, friends, or teachers to attend college, but they do not feel ready. A person who wants to attend college should not take on such a large financial and time commitment just to please other people. College is expensive, and it does not make sense to spend money on a college degree if they are unsure of their path.
Although college is stressful and time consuming , having your dream career, is a huge life achievement. Having a job isn’t the same as having a career “I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as 'making a life”(Maya Angelou). If you sell yourself short by not going to college you’ll end up working just to make ends means not because it's what you enjoy doing, it's due to your family counting on it. Those who go to college will end up having a better future than those who don’t. I agree that going to college is more beneficial because my view on the topic states that in order to have a secure and clear future you must go to college.
Earning a college degree is one of the achievements many of our descendants have had the honor of receiving a diploma showing there accomplishment of completing their education to become a master at what they do. As it was many years ago when you got an education it was almost like an apprenticeship in which you would learn from a mater individual and then receive what today we would call a diploma. Back then though it was more or less a verbal agreement that you had advanced through the ranks of learning and had become capable of running the show all by yourself. Although this was probably less expensive than most colleges today, it took many, many years to become a master at your trade, and often times it was difficult to open your own shop.
