My goal is to portray characters from different walks of life, shedding light on their struggles, triumphs, and humanity. By immersing myself in these roles, I aspire to create performances that not only entertain but also serve as catalysts for personal growth and social change. Through the power of storytelling, I believe we can shape lives and instill hope in the hearts of many.
One of my primary goals as an actor is to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. In the entertainment industry, diverse narratives often go unheard or are misrepresented. I am dedicated to working on projects that provide a platform for those whose stories have been marginalized. By shining a spotlight on these narratives, I aim to inspire and empower individuals from all backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
Acting is not limited to the stage or screen; it has the power to extend beyond the confines of the theater. I am committed to leveraging my platform as an actor to engage with communities and advocate for positive change. Whether through volunteer work, outreach programs, or collaborations with nonprofit organizations, I intend to utilize acting as a vehicle for social impact. By combining art with activism, I hope to inspire others to join me in making a difference in the
Michael Paulson, a well-known American journalist recently wrote a piece for the New York Times in September of 2015 called “This Broadway Season, Diversity Is Front and Center”. This piece focuses on the uprising of people from different races being introduced and playing roles in Broadway shows. Paulson asserts this positive statement by providing the reader with many examples of upcoming/present diverse Broadway shows and explaining how the audience can connect with these cultural stories. Paulson also establishes a friendly and highly proud tone when informing his readers that the lack of diversity on Broadway is overcoming; reassuring that indeed times are changing.
The underrepresentation of minority actors in prominent roles is another example of unequal opportunities within the media industry. In 1998, African American actors filled only 13.4% of roles despite making up a larger percentage of the population, whereas Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American actors were even further underrepresented. The manner in which the media portrays different racial groups has far-reaching consequences for both individuals and wider society. Addressing these disparities and ensuring fair representation across all aspects is crucial for promoting equality and dismantling the barriers created by

Starr learns to use her voice to fight against wrongdoing. The story reflects real life circumstances of social injustice, and how minority groups are discriminated against. A common theme in the
Opening her speech, Winfrey recounts the time in 1964, when she was a little girl and witnessed the moment the first black man, Sidney Poitier, won an Oscar. She narrates that she has attempted to describe what the moment “means to a little girl” that grew up unfortunate and poor like she did. Winfrey’s obvious emotion in that story is moving and influences the celebrities in the audience and also the viewers streaming the award show. By sharing her story of witnessing Poitier winning, Winfrey highlights how the event was very influential on her as a little girl and conveys to the audience that representation in media can be very significant and powerful for a person. Not only does the emotion in the speech emphasize the importance of representation, but the anecdote bolsters Winfrey’s credibility.
In the production of Until the Flood by Dael Orlandersmith, a single actress portrays how the tragedy of the Michael Brown case impacted others through different perspectives of both African American and white people surrounding the social uprising in the town of Ferguson, Missouri. The play uses interviews of residents throughout the town to tell the story of how the shooting death of Michael Brown by a white police officer sparked immense amounts of protests and riots as well as division between people. Orlandersmith plays every role presented in the production with passion and adapts to every role she takes on making the production a fascinating watch. Two moments in the production that I feel encapsulated the show’s meaning
Uplifting minority voices through film and text is critical to shed light on social injustices while simultaneously entertaining, exposing audiences to historical realities, and provoking them to understand the struggles of others. An example of this includes Theodore Melfi’s film ‘Hidden Figures,’ which take place during the 1960s, historically known as the era of the ‘Space Race,’ while also tackling the history of Jim Crow Laws, and the impending social reform of the ‘Civil Rights Movement’. ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is written and set during the ‘Roaring Twenties’; an era of prohibition, debauchery, and the ‘Jazz-Age.’ The prose novel, narrated by Nick Carraway, follows Jay Gatsby’s pursuit to rekindle a fleeting romance
In her play A movie Star Has To Star In Black and White, Kennedy portrays Clara's suffering for self-identification through projecting into three Hollywood movies. Through the play, Clara is a promising playwright who writes her first literary work. Yet what she is writing really is her autobiography. Like Fornes, Kennedy uses autobiographical writing as a release for the heroine's feelings and as an expression of her psychic fragmentation. By writing her autobiography, Clara reveals her struggle to build her identity as a black female in a white male dominated society.
My life has been like a roller coaster running on its tracks going through the twists and turns and the ups and downs. Much like a rollercoaster being guided along with the urge to keep pushing forward my life has been driven by three vigorous passions that burn deep within the pit of my soul: the significance of family, the desire to help others, and the exhilarating feeling of exploring new destinations. Families are like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions, but our roots remain as one. As the youngest of three children I’ve been able to learn from the mistakes of my older siblings to help contribute to my development as a young man.
Trio Scholarship essay Participating in a trio program has been a unique experience. Finally although i was never professionally an actor, I have learned that my discourse community has taught how to channel my emotions not only in my work and on the stage but in my writing. Jack Ma once said, “The world needs new leadership, but the new leadership is about working together.” This could not be more true at Boston University through its Kilachand Honors College. I believe it is because their approach of interdisciplinary problem-solving, is about expanding students’ world-views. In this program you are learning with different individuals who have different interest and fields of study. According to Pew Research Center, “Political polarization is the defining feature of early 21st century American politics...”.
T being a sellout. Obviously, the 1980’s were a very different time, and the portrayal of African Americans in mainstream media has changed considerably since then for the better, with black people now having a much wider range of leading roles available as well as better representation at award shows. Since this poem was written in 2002, it is easy for the speaker to look back and label Mr. T as a negative role model due to his cooperation in demeaning roles; but I do not think that it is fair to look at Mr. T in this condescending way because the fact that he was able to win the uphill battle of achieving success in Hollywood during a time when it was much less considerate toward black people is impressive, even if the means by which Mr. T attained such success were controversial. All in all, Terrance Hayes’s “Mr. T-” may be harsh, but at least it advocates the pursuit of positive role models for the African American youth, which, fortunately, is what America now has a larger supply
I chose this film because it showed how hard the union workers and families worked in fighting racial injustices, and because it inspired myself to move forward with strong ideologies and pride. 2. Stereotyping in mass media was an important concern of Chicana/o media activists because it imprinted a demeaning label by only casting Chicana/o actors with "minor roles: villains, sidekicks, temptresses, where their main function is to provide the protagonists, typically a handsome white
