It doesn't take a hero to order anyone into battle, it takes a hero to be one of those kind of people who go into battle. What makes a hero a hero? A hero is a person who thinks of the others first. Without having this quality a hero does not do any good because he or she is a person who affects the people around him. A hero is a leader. The Hunger Games and The Odyssey are two different stories with two very different heroes. Although Katniss and Odysseus are two very different heroes, they are still similar in a way, like being brave and courageous. Katniss is the hero in the story of The Hunger Games because in the beginning of the story, she volunteered herself for her sister. At that moment Katniss didn’t think about herself, but about …show more content…
Odysseus got thrown many obstacles along his journey back home from the war of trojan. Like he was stuck in the Cyclopes cave and lost many men there. He was cursed by the Gods and landed on the island of Circe. He also traveled to the underworld, to return home. Odysseus was warned by Circe about the Sirens. She said that they were creatures that called men towards them through their singing. Odysseus put wax in the men’s ears so they wouldn't hear them, and risked his life and tied himself to the ship to hear it and guide them. The worst part of his journey was that he was almost twenty yearss away from home, his son and his one true love, his wife Penelope. He had to fight with all his strength to try to get home to them. Although Odysseus lost all his men in his journey, he stayed strong and survived for hope of going home to his family. Odysseus characteristics are his loyalty, strength, skills, determination, courage, responsibility, and most of all his intelligence. Odysseus strength lies in his intelligence, which allows Odysseus to go through many of his obstacles. Like when he said his name was nobody to the Cyclopes to escape the cave and when he fooled his wife’s suitors towards the end of the story. Not only is Odysseus, known for being a hero because of his intelligence and bravery, but because other people saw him as a great person like
Usually, epic heroes share common character traits such as courage, self control, fearless, daring. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is my belief that Odysseus is heroic mostly because his is courageous and fearless. For example, he wasn’t panicking when he was against the cyclops, he was thinking of what to do so they can escape the cave.
Despite his superhuman characteristics, Odysseus proves to be a false hero whose human imperfections, such as pride, vulnerability, and ignorance, define character. But Odysseus shows he has traits of an epic hero. He showed his intelligence when he disguised him and his men as a sheep so that the cyclops would unwittingly let them out the cave. Also, Odysseus had the hero like quality to lead. He showed this quality by keeping his men together for the most part by earning their loyalty and devotion he lead them and they were by his side even when they fought Scylla.
Strengths and Weaknesses Odysseus was a fierce fighter and had many, many strengths, but also some weaknesses. In The Odyssey, Greek culture is evident as Odysseus shows cleverness, arrogance, and courage on his journey. Through the poem, Odysseus expresses these attributes. One of Odysseus’s best known strengths is his cleverness and smarts.
The first trait is that he is a very arrogant person and this often puts him and his men in danger. Secondly, Odysseus can be deceitful and not fully communicate the facts of each situation. Odysseus was a weak leader and his lack of vision in not seeing the strength and possibilities in his men combined with his inability to effectively communicate to those around him ultimately led to his failure of not being able to safely deliver his men back to Ithaca. The story of the Cyclops in Homer 's The Odyssey illustrated how Odysseus '
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Personal strengths and weaknesses are magnified during the course of a journey. Some strengths that were magnified during the course of Odysseus’ journey were courage and self-discipline. There were many instances in which he proves to be a courageous man. In the Cyclops story, Odysseus knows that whatever lives on the island he has arrived to is “a towering brute” and a “wild man ignorant of civility” and yet he decides to venture into the cave.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
During Odysseus’s journeys, while trying to find his way back home, he goes through many adventures showing off these characteristics of a hero. The first characteristic that Odysseus possessed, which shows he is an epic hero, is how brave he was. For instance, when Odysseus wanted to venture off to Circe and leave the island, it was Eurylochos that told him not to go without his
Odysseus encounters many monsters and immortals throughout his homecoming journey. He faces everything from Sea Nymphs to Sirens, from Lotus Eaters to Cyclopes, and from Enchantresses to even the Gods themselves. Because Odysseus stuck through and pursued on, he finally returned to his wife and child. When Odysseus arrives in his homeland, Athena directs him to Eumaeus’ hut where he meets his son. At first, his son refuses to believe his father has come back, but eventually convinces himself his father has truly returned.
Odysseus’s traits help him achieve his goal of returning to his home. Odysseus and his men have a lot of willpower to continue traveling after some dangerous and life risking experiences with cannibals, lotus-eaters, cyclops and many more creatures that could of killed Odysseus and his whole crew. Odysseus's confidence and epic hero traits only increase as the story goes on, his confidence in his men increase as he starts noticing how strong and powerful his men can be, and also shows confidence in
Odysseus has some good traits, some bad flaws, and has been in some ugly situations, but overall he is a true hero. Some of the traits that exemplify his heroism traits are his cleverness, determination, and his bravery. In several scenarios he saves his men from sticky situations, showing his bravery, his determination
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
Throughout her days in the arena she experienced death, loss, and hunger like everyone else. She had to-- kill like everyone else. But why is katniss the best tribute in The Hunger games? Well, she has way more experience gathering food , gained the most sponsors throughout the games by keeping a “smile” on her face . And fought till the end while outsmarting her fellow tributes.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus was a major hero of the novel. He had both heroic traits and human weaknesses. No matter what is thrown at him he never stops trying to get home, getting past a Cyclopes, the Lady Circe, and sirens. He even gets through the Underworld and lives. Despite this, Odysseus does have faults about him, though not as many as there are qualities. He is a worldwide symbol, an archetype, of both nobility and bravery. Odysseus, the epic hero of the Odyssey, a great leader with many attributes as well as flaws, is no ordinary man.
