La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle, has won many awards and is about the love story between Sebastian and Mia, who come together because of their common goal of making it big time in Hollywood. The scene that follows is when they are having dinner after some time apart. It portrays the theme of how change can affect relationships. Initially in the scene, the camera is placed over the shoulder of Sebastian, with the view of Mia as they are having a conversation over dinner. This is a two shot scene accompanied by very minimal editing, indicating they are sharing the frame as a couple. However, as tension builds up in the conversation, the type of camera shot changes to a one shot. We now view each of them as an individual whenever they speak, unlike previously. Above we see that Mia is almost engulfed by her background, as the soft green curtain is the only thing we are able to see behind her, forcing the audience to look upon the facial expressions on her face. This is a handheld shot, first of this type in the film. The clear contrast from having a steadicam to which it suddenly becomes shaky, stands out and shows that we have hit the exciting incidents in the narrative plot representing that they are having troubles in their relationship. This shows the importance of film shots and their impact it can give off to the audience. From then on, the film includes more shaky handheld shots, giving not only a contrast in film shots but also their own contrast in their relationship and that they are changing. From this scene in La la land, we can perceive the theme that people change. Just like seasons, over time so do people and their outlook on life.
