As Lady Macbeth had heard all about the witches' prophecies she displays her desire for power and lets Macbeth know how much she wants him to become king by asking him to kill King Duncan. In Act I, Scene VI Shakespear shows us the true nature of Lady Macbeth, “Look like th’innocent flower, But be the serpent under’t”. This quote was placed in the play to show us the true deceptive nature of Lady Macbeth and her evil intentions under her innocent appearance, foreshadowing her manipulative nature. As the play progresses in Act II, Scene VII, Lady Macbeth begins to question Macbeth's soft nature and states, “Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting “I dare not” wait upon “I would,” Like the poor cat i’ th’ adage?”As Macbeth begins to question if killing King Duncan is the right thing to do Lady Macbeth questions his masculinity and asks if he values his “ornament of life” (his honor and courage) as he is too afraid to act upon his
The quote "A little water washes away this deed" is spoken by Lady Macbeth in Act II, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's play Macbeth. In this scene, Lady Macbeth and her husband have just committed regicide ( the act of killing a king or queen) by killing King Duncan while he slept in their castle. Lady Macbeth tries to comfort her husband, who is wracked with guilt and despair, by telling him that a little water will wash away the evidence of their crime. The quote is important because it highlights the wickedness of Lady Macbeth and her willingness to commit evil acts without remorse. She seems to believe that the act of washing their hands with water will absolve them of their crime, suggesting that she is either deluded or completely
“Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (Shakespeare 1.1.12). This quote means that what's considered good is wrong, and what's wrong is good. Macbeth and his actions prove this to be true. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. Macbeth is portrayed as a tragic hero through his error in judgment, reversal of fortune, and excessive pride in the eyes of Aristotle.
In the middle of the play macbeth is subtly manipulated by those who seem to want to help him this is shown within the quote “Chastise with the valour of my tongue”with this quotes prepositions it suggests how susceptible macbeth is as Lady Macbeth hopes that she can persuade Macbeth into seeing her plan by talking to him and seducing him. She is now starting to see a queenly future and will stop at nothing to get it.furthermore it may also suggest how macbeth has been tied to this now as 2 people he trusts with his life are now slyly manipulating him into doing what they want this is further reinforced in the quote”Stay you imperfect speakers, tell me more” this is just after macbeth has received another prophecy and he wants to know more
“When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man” ( Act 1 scene 7). This quote by Lady Macbeth is to her husband, Macbeth, after he has doubts about killing King Duncan. Lady Macbeth is basically telling Macbeth that if he has the courage to kill the king, he will become a true man and be able to achieve strength. She is pushing him to be more motivated and cold hearted , believing that if it is necessary to achieve power and success. However, this quote also mainly shows the toxic masculinity in the play, as it shows that a true man must be violent and aggressive.
A fundamental part of successful persuasion is being familiar with one’s audience and knowing what may or may not fly out their other ear. Otherwise, it would be like baiting a rabbit into a cage with meat. In order to truly gain an audience’s interest and trust, they must be told something that they consider attention grabbing, designed for their absorption. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Lady Macbeth dangles this rhetorical bait over Macbeth, her husband, to expedite their covert plans to murder King Duncan and take the throne. The problem is that Macbeth has become hesitant to carry out those plans and is reconsidering his decision.
To warn Macbeth of how to act during the feast before killing Duncan, she reminds him to "look like the innocent flower,/But be the serpent under't”(1.5.76-78), meaning to be feminine on the outside and masculine on the inside. She is able to relay the message with confidence that it will work for Macbeth because she has done so all her life. She has had a lot of practice with acting nice, like an “innocent flower” on the outside yet being cruel and evil like a “serpent” on the inside. When welcoming Duncan and his men for their stay at Macbeth’s castle, she puts on a false persona of feminine benevolence. Because of Lady Macbeth’s kindness and Duncan’s overall trust in his hosts, he does not suspect anything will happen and they are able to commit murder with more ease.
