Reading Response Journal 1: Madonnas of Echo Park
1. Summary of Author’s Note:
Where the main population in the classrooms are Vietnamese and Mexicans we are introduced to two characters, Brando and Aurora. In the six grade, many of the students are divide within there own social groups the Vietnamese talked to other Vietnamese and Mexicans talked to Mexicans. Even though the two groups never had anything in common they had MTV in common, music was the universal language. For everyone to be able to communicate with one another Ms. O’Neill created a dance party for the class. Everyone in the class had to bring a record for the class to be able to dance to; when dance day came

Discussion Questions
-What will happen to Hector after the interrogation? Will he give the money back or be sent back home?
-Will Adam begin to kill others to get the ladder? Why did Adam kill Diego then?
5. Reading Process
While I was reading the chapter their were times I wondered what I was reading since it would flash back an forth. In the novel since we are barley getting to know the character I was very confused of who was who in the novel. Also another issue that I had while reading the novel was that all the parts were in English so I had to translate what the characters had to say.
6. Vocabulary
-Deceit- the action or practice of deceiving someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth. This was an important vocabulary since I knew that Hector was telling a lie but I wondered why he would tell a lie since it was not in front of the police.
-Galvanize- coat (iron or steel) with a protective layer of zinc. With this vocabulary in the sentence I knew that the author was talking about a fence but I did not know what type of fence the character was standing next to.
- Mestizo- a man of mixed race, especially the offspring of a Spaniard and an American Indian. This word was used to describe a women at first I thought it was the color of the skin but now looking back it was an important vocabulary to be able to describe Cristina
As Mother Teresa once said “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” the feeling of loneliness can be terrible for everyone making them feel like they have lost everything they had. People can start feeling the sensation of loneliness because of their own families or the surrounding around them. Family can play the most important role to feeling alone and feeling unwanted by them causing you to make decisions that do not have a back button on them. Everyone is different and they all face loneliness in their own way. In Brando Skyhorse Novel, The Madonnas of Echo Park, Beatriz is the mother of Felicia and the grandmother of Aurora.
Mestizaje is defined by the interbreeding and cultural intermixing of Spanish and American Indiana people. The term dates back to the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century. Mestizos were the sons and daughters of the foreigners and native women. Progressively, “more and more children were produced by marriages, informal liaisons, casual affairs, and rapes” (Mundy). The mestizos grew in numbers and became a dominant presence in colonial Spanish America.
In every other journal that I have written on this book, I have written about the events that occur in the book in my own words. In this journal I was able to write about what I thought the main conflicts were and how they came to be. Though the main characters remain the same and no new ones are introduced, the author is able to twist and turn what the reader assumes what is going to happen into a completely different outcome. This journal was very interesting to write as I started to form more in depth opinions on Lisbeth Salander as she conflicted with society, herself, and on Mikael Blomkvist while he conflicted with himself. The first analysis I will be doing is on Lisbeth Salander.
It can feel a little like readers are left in the dark, the characters know more than you do. The role of the reader is really just a fly on the wall, observing the discussion of topics that are not given enough context to understand in full. This burning curiosity and naivety experienced by the reader are shared by another character in the book, one who could very well represent these feelings, Riri. Story is not finished when
I dislike the sequence of the novel because when I’m concentrated reading one of the stories and then suddenly changes to another story. I find it very annoying because you moving from one to another and then going back. 3 Would you
This book was interesting for me because it allowed me to relate to a character. I love reading novels that not only allow me to feel a connection with a character, but allow me to relate to their personality or
To Whites and police officers, the Mexican American youth all seemed like a gang and were feared by Whites for looking different. Bean Baeder illustrates in his report how after the murder case, stereotyping all Mexican Americans for a dress style shows how this fashion trend of Pachuco style (zoot suites) can cause a difference in a

I really enjoyed the story and even more so the way people talked and what was sociably acceptable in the time of the story. I disliked the amount of time it took to complete a chapter and this was a struggle for me to want to put that time for annotating instead of something else. I enjoyed most the feeling of accomplishment on completing the entire set of four books, and looking back over my annotations it looked much nicer than what I had so that also felt accomplishing. The most frustrating part of the assignment was finishing one book and knowing you still had more to do, especially because I did not time organize in my favor. My standards, I feel, are low and probably why I also feel like there is more I need to do, the problem is that the feeling of incompleteness is not driving me to work on it more.
If i had to tell you the difference between Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, i would first say that Dr.Jekyll is a man that seperates his private life and also his public life. They also would claim him to be the good side . He is a doctor as well as a long time friend and also a a successful scholar. During his private life he is more forward for more liberty and also to do activities that will bring public disgrace if he did things that were known around the area. Utterson even often called him "devoted" Mr. Hyde on the other hand is a one part individual.
Darl burns the barn to free his mother’s body from the injustice that Anse selfishly keeps going. Jewel refuses to give this to his mother because his love blinds him from the logic. He instead saves her reeking, decaying corpse. The Bundrens declare Darl insane. Not because any member of the family thinks him insane, but because of their own selfishness.
Deception comes in many forms and can be seen in all kind of ways but mainly when someone purposely causes someone to believe something that isn 't true to gain a personal advantage. Many authors use this tactic in their plays books and other literary work like in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the author uses the technique of deception to mislead Claudius, Gertrude, himself, Ophelia and his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spare their feelings and to carry out a crime. Hamlet uses deception throughout the novel, but one way is to distract everyone from his true intention which is to gather information against Claudius to prove he killed his father. Shakespeare contributes all this back into his work by making each character in the play enact on some form of deceit to uncover the obscure truth.
It’s Kind Of A Funny Story : Reader’s Log 25% - What has been challenging so far? In my eyes, the most challenging part was understanding the difference between Craig, the main character’s, life then to his life currently. He talks in the beginning about how he is depressed and he quickly changes the time period to when he wasn’t “bad”.
Before finishing the book I would find myself constantly wondering about the next chapter. Thinking of possible outcomes or solutions to problems within the story. Even relating it back to myself putting myself in the character’s shoes. How the main character Naomi had challenges at a young age but a continuous positive outlook. Drawing me closer to the book to see someone my age handling these situations with a positive
I also realized that some of the different ways to change behavior seemed to be the same idea repeated in a different way in a different section of the book. It made the novel feel repetitive. Another thing I didn’t like about the book was that it had a sudden, unsatisfying ending. I thought it would end on a positive note and reiterate how the things discussed in the book could help the reader, but it just ended after discussing rumination. I would have liked something included at the end that would make me feel excited to try the suggestions in the
