What is courage? John Wayne said that “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” The word courageous does not accurately describe United States Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell. I have admired Marcus’ life for a number of years. His life and experiences help keep me motivated during challenging times. Many of you may have heard of or seen the movie, Lone Survivor. Lone Survivor is a true account of an extreme gun battle, where Marcus Luttrell was the only survivor from the team during a military operation.
From an early age, Marcus Luttrell wanted to be a Navy Seal. At age fourteen, Marcus began training to become one. Particularly, I envision him drawing that line in the sand and crawling inch by inch towards his goal. Survival. I always think, if Marcus can go through those impossible set of circumstances, the challenge that I am currently facing do not even register on the scale of the challenges he went through. Having the will to survive and setting those small goals to bring you out of a situation are paramount.
Marcus Luttrell is a Navy Seal, an Author, and a public speaker. He is the epitome of motivation. His life and story can make a positive impact on each and every one of us. Thesis for Lone Survivor The “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson is about a Navy Seal who ends up losing four of his closest “brothers,” along with other close Navy SEALs, in Afghanistan during a single attack against the Taliban. Marcus Luttrell is more than lucky, he is also highly skilled in the art of combat and is a shining example of human determination. Many people speculate that simply surviving does not make heroes, but surviving against the odds that were against Luttrell is legendary. Luttrell has done much more than just serve his country; he has also started charities for veterans and continues to be an avid member of his community.

An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. Bravery and courage are interchangeable words used to describe the mind of a person who faces difficulty and pain without fear, according to Dictionary.com. Bravery is displayed all throughout the heroic tale of Beowulf, named after its protagonist Beowulf. Knowing that Grendel was a very dangerous character, Beowulf chose to offer up his services to halt the terror being caused by Grendel. No one had to seek him out; rather he came on his own accords simply for the good of these people living in King Hrothgar’s kingdom. He put himself in dangers way even though he no real tie to these people, and not asking about any sort of payment before going out on the hunt.

Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.
