Mass media is a powerful force in the United States today and people often overlook the influence it has on society. As our nation’s media grows at an exponential rate so does the problems it carries with it. There is a whole plethora of issues revolving around the toxic media but I’m only going to highlight one major reoccurring theme, this being the connection between mass killings and the media. At this point you may think I’ve went off the deep end and there couldn’t possibly be any correlations between the two ideas. I’m going to prove you wrong by showing how media influences horrible acts of violence, whether it be intentionally or unintentionally.
Many people look at horrible massacres like the ones in Aurora or Sandy Hook and attribute

This theory is mainly focused on the killer himself whereas other notions tend to lean towards causes surrounding the perpetuator. As facts start to come out after the massacres we frequently learn that the individual behind the scary attacks is an unstable person that has needed help with internal problems in the past. Many times the person is actually seeing medical attention for psychiatric reasons at the time of their sudden rampages. Matthew Lysiak, a reporter for News Week, gives an insight on previous mass murderers’ mental problems. One killer he mentions is James Holmes, the man behind the horrific movie theatre massacre in Aurora, Colorado. During 2012 Holmes’ physiatrist wrote in her notes “he may be shifting insidiously into a frank psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. Lysiak also goes on to talk about another notable mass murderer, Aaron Alexis. On August 4, 2013, naval police were called to Alexis’ room and when they arrived his bad was completely ripped apart because he thought people were hiding in it. All of this evidence could be seen as substantial evidence backing up the connection between mass killings and mental …show more content…
You might be wondering, what could reporters possibly have to do with such horrible events? The answer is simple, we live in society where everyone wants news as fast as they can, and when a major event happens all of the media submerges onto it. This frantic rush to be the first one for a headline has almost turned into a race. Now, you’re probably asking yourself another question, what did this have to do with someone killing mass amounts of innocent people? This is answer isn’t as simple and lies in the murderer’s past. Several of these people that committed these atrocities lived isolated lives with little care from or towards other. No one ever payed attention them, but if they go on a killing spree the media will have them all over the news and the whole world will know who they are Chris Harper Mercer, the man behind the Oregon shooting, wrote about another killer that men like him are “alone and unknown… yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are.” This quote goes to show as these cold blooded killers live isolated and troubled lives they become hungry for attention. They may be crazy but they know this horrific violence will have them living in
Before his massacre, James met with at least three mental health experts at the University of Colorado. The three different psychiatrists had slightly different diagnosis. Even though they were different James knew his mental health was going into a downward spiral. Lynne Fenton was one of the psychiatrist James met with believed he was homicidal.
He was a smart, educated young man, who loved life and was always smiling. It has been said the reason behind the mass shooting that took place was because Holmes had a mental illness. According to CNN,” Prosecutor George Brauchler argued that mental illness shouldn’t be used as a “Shield” to protect Holmes from the punishment he deserves for taking so many lives in such a cruel manner.
Media plays such a huge role in the lives of the average American that it is no wonder that it would affect their views and beliefs. When watching any media story concerning a court case the newsfeed always focuses on what the victims of the crime are affected, not the facts of the case. In the book “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson, it is highlighted how the media is able to change the public’s opinion by displaying facts inconsistent with the case. Stevenson speaks about hot in the early 1980’s the case coverage changed from, “everyone in the community is the victim…” to specifically about how the victim and their families are impacted.
His family had a long line of mental illnesses and at a young age one of his siblings die(13 Most Deranged Serial Killers of All Time, 2021). This caused his actions to change from being normal which sparked parts of mental illness(13 Most Deranged Serial Killers of All Time,
Holmes is taken to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo for supervision. A month later, Holmes Attorneys defended his client, by saying, "Mr. Holmes suffers from a severe mental illness and was in the throes of a psychotic episode when he committed the acts that resulted in the tragic loss of life and injuries sustained by movie goers on July 20, 2012” (“Colorado Theater”, 2017). Holmes defense to his actions was because he believe the reason he killed everyone is because he was unable to control his actions because of the movie he watched.
The media makes it seem as if they praise things like this. Constantly seeing things on the level of mass school shootings can be dangerous. It can cause more shootings and bad situations. “I use to feel bad for the ones who were killed, but now Eric Harris and Seung Hui Cho became my idols” (“Aaron Ybarra” Herz). The shooter of the Seattle Pacific University shooting was inspired by other people that engaged in the same activity.
School Shootings: How We All Miss the Point... The aftermath of a school shooting is tragic, depressing, and causes hatred for the lives lost and the person who took them. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. How We All Miss the Point on School Shootings, by Mark Manson, explains what and why these mass shootings happen. He starts by using examples of shootings and the murderer’s past.
On April 20, 1999, the unimaginable occurred at Columbine High School in the small town of Littleton, Colorado. A school shooting, carried out by, then senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took the entire community by storm. With 15 deaths, including the perpetrators, and 24 non-fatal injuries, the memories of this horrific massacre will forever resonate in the minds of all. With a meticulously thought out plan, the two shooters prepared guns and bombs in order to perform the sickening act. Families, the FBI, local officials, psychologists, and more spent a multitude of time trying to figure out the reasoning as to what motivated the two boys to kill and cause so much pain to others.
Mass murderers and serial killers are nothing new to today’s society. We learn about them in TV shows, books, research papers, in our classes, etc. Psychologists have spent decades trying to uncover the truth behind these killers’ madness. Serial killers vary in their behaviors, techniques, desires, mental illnesses and their personal lives. Have you ever heard of the Tamiami Trail Killer?

In Dave Cullen 's book Columbine we are given a new perspective on the columbine high school shooting, and the events prior. We are shown Eric and Dylan’s personal lives outside of being the “Cruel” and “Heartless” people that they are. They are people that we have created and refuse to accept so it’s their fault for what they become. Have we as a society willingly created this?
For example, the most recently alarming mass shooting occurred only a month ago in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a former student waltzed into one of the school buildings with an AR-15, pulled a fire alarm, and aimed his weapon at fleeing students, faculty, and staff, killing 17, and wounding 17 other victims, and has been broadcast across every platform almost nonstop. While this heartbreaking tragedy deserves all of the media attention it’s been receiving, there have been approximately 14 additional mass shootings, where 14 people have been killed, and almost 50 have been injured, with very little to no coverage in the news. Mainstream media absolutely shapes our perceptions of people and events, and by influencing public opinion, the media also directly influences our political atmosphere gun laws. Almost three
Most of the suspects of mass shootings are young males who usually commit the crime on their own with careful planning of the event. Most perpetrators have a fascination with weapons and the shootings usually occur in broad daylight in public places (Frances). There is an obvious difference in the brain of mass shooters to those of non-mass shooters. Low orbital cortex activity may be the main difference between the two groups of people. About 1 in 100 people are psychopaths, there was a study that was done at UC Irvine by James Fallon where he used a PET scan to measure brain activity.
Much of the criminal activity that takes place today is heavily related to the lack of treatment for mental illness. According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 60% of shooter in mass shootings that took place in the United States after 1970 displayed symptoms of acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their inhumane acts. I am sure that most of you are aware of the Sandy Hook shooting that took place on December 12, 2012. The perpetrator, Adam Lanza took the innocent lives of 20 students as well as the lives of 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Lanza had displayed key signs of mental illness as young as the age of three.
