Writing in “A Matter of Degrees,” the author Kim Anne said: “Skills-based credentials for better paying jobs are emerging in numerous industries as an alternative to traditional college degrees. For employers, a post-secondary education does not guarantee that a job candidate possesses the work habits and skills to perform.” In addition to the promise of a higher salary, college offers a myriad of benefits to students who participate in the academic experience. One benefit of attending college is to better an individual’s skill in a career choice. “It really opened my eyes. For the first time in my life, I realized that learning could be about me and my interests, about who I was,” (Paul) a student said. I myself have made a connection with my major, which is art. It took me a few tries to figure out what type of career I can work in and enjoy. My first year in college we did an assignment that helped us determine what jobs fit our personality. I could see how many people really didn’t know what they wanted to do in high school, but after spending some time in college they find that path much easier. Dr. John T. “At Thomas Nelson Community College, a remarkable statistic is that 45 percent of our students are 25 years of age or older. And what powerful learners many of them are, truly appreciative of what education has to offer and highly motivated to do their best!” (Dever). The student appreciates the campus because it expands the knowledge around them. The students have a broader range of subjects to study which will help earn more experiences after their courses here are completed. There are many of other colleges that offers this as well, and more students are preferring to go to college, because it gives them new experiences which will help them gain more
