Because of the power and influence that media has on today’s society, suicide due to cyberbullying has increased dramatically over the years. Additionally, studies have found that social media use is significantly associated with an increase in depression. The negative effects of technology and social media on mental health and well-being cannot be ignored. Children and young adults like Nate Bronstein, Phoebe Prince and Ryan Patrick Halligan all were victims of cyber bullying. According to a CBS News article many of the children were 15 years of age who were ignored by teachers years before they finally gave up. These children were all bullied and people stood around and did nothing to stop it. If someone cared more about these students, they would be alive today. Media has become a primary source from which we obtain information relating to things or events that surrounds us. To prove this statement, Postman states that "all public discourse increasingly takes the form of entertainment” and how people are attracted to entertainment, they watch and listen to all that is seen and heard in the media, and after that they believe everything and thus they are easily influenced. Vicki Coleman also talks about this aspect in her article entitled Social Media as a Primary Source: A Coming of Age where she tries to say that this time social media has a powerful impact on students, faculty, scholars, and the public at-large. These categories attracted by this source because it allows them ”to communicate and collaborate in ways that disregard institutional boundaries.” Another thing which Neil Postman emphasizes in his text is that “A message denotes a specific, concrete statement about the world.
We are allowing television to shape our lifestyles whether it’s education, politics, news, and religion. Postman believes that we aren’t getting the truth because culture is defined as the truth and it is changing because of television and the way it’s being presented. Postman says, “The changes in media bring about the changes in the structure of people's’ mind or changes in their cognitive capacities” (Postman, 2005). Television is a source of entertainment and isn’t shaping us for the better. “We are witnessing a major cultural revolution that is having an incredible impact on our society.

The movement also heavily relies on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to mobilize supporters, share information, and expand the voice of black radicals. Social media enable the movement to reach global audiences, help democratize the flow of information, and allow the movement to participate in citizen journalism, which is crucial to exposing police atrocities and holding police accountable (Carney & Kelekay, 2022, p. 560). The role of media in the Black Lives Matter movement also demonstrates how the internet has become a new public domain. The Internet has enabled the movement to reach a global audience and created its own media ecosystem, challenging the narrative methods of mainstream
In some instances, cyberbullies have used these and other mediums to post potentially embarrassing photos or videos of their victims online for everyone to see” (Differences…, 1). Bullying has become an increasing problem because of the use of technology as a means of bullying in addition to the traditional type that many people are used to. Media has had a significant impact on American culture over the course of history. It began when the general population gained knowledge of public figures through hearing speeches. When the printing press was picking up, it had a large influence on the ways politicians could voice themselves. As time went by, America slowly changed from having an educational based media to an entertainment based media. Well that trait is orientalism by comparing cultures as 1:1 ratio, in order to put specific cultures at the top, and most of them at the bottom by attaching stereotypes to them. A word simple just as black, or white, green or blue, yellow or orange, purple or pink; This are words that describe things, not people, but we can argue that people are objects as stated by Franz Fanon a French philosopher in his criticism about colonialism to be aware of ourselves in a third person vision; meaning that we are what we think we are. This constructs the idea of a poor individual, will always stay poor because he/she believes it. Society attaches all of this meaning to cultures, people,
