Mobster from “Goodfella’s Heist” Apprehended
A mobster who was part of the famous mob heist that was featured in the movie “Goodfella’s” has been apprehended. He has been keeping his role from the famous movie a secret for decades, prosecutors say.
Vincent Asaro will go on trial Monday for charges that he was part of one of the largest cash heists in American history. The Lufthansa robbery which took place in 1978 at the Kennedy airport netted the robbers around $6 million.
Asaro, who has a history of mob related petty crimes, was arrested after being “ratted on” by his cousin Gaspare Valenti. Valenti worked with the police to coax Asaro into a confession while he was wearing a wire.

The crime had to be OK’d by Asaro due to the fact that the airport was the turf of the crime family Asaro was associated with.
Prosecutors also believe that $750,000 was given to high ranking mobsters who were part of the robbery. Not all of the mobsters who was promised money received it. It is believed that some of the mobsters promised money either were killed before they received it or just wasn’t given any money.
While being recorded by his cousin, Asaro complained that he didn’t receive his share of the robbery money. Prosecutors believe he did receive all of his money and blew it at the local horse track. Asaro had a bad gambling problem at the time and immediately following the robbery was witnessed at the horse track placing larger bets than normal for Asaro.
With a hand full of mobsters with their new found wealth itching to spend it they were buying lavish cars, furs and jewlery. This prompted a bloody string of murders ordered by Robert De Niro’s caracter in “goodfella’s” because he was concerned this may attracted unwanted attention from law

You may have seen the movie and recognize the story. This is part of a story that was told in the movie “Goodfella’s” which centered on the Lufthansa robbery and subsequent killings.
The man on trial today is Vincent Asaro who was one of the planners of the heist. Asaro was a key member of the Bonanno crime family who roamed the streets of Queens and Brooklyn.
Asaro was a captain with the Bonanno crime family and with the influence of this Mafia family he was able to kill people who disagreed with him, set-up big scores stealing and extorting money from people. One time Asaro, who believed a person to be a “rat”, choked a person to death with a dog collar.
The Lufthansa heist which was located at John F. Kennedy Airport was the crime of the century for Asaro and the Bonanno family. Asaro flourished working for the Mafia, living for the power and wealth that it provided for him. The Lufthansa robbery netted around $6 million in jewelry and cash, this amount was in 1978 dollars. It is believed that Asaro himself got away with $500-$750 that he squandered at the race track, to fuel his gambling
Adam Richetti Adam Eddie Richetti was born no August 5, 1909 in Strawn, Texas. Being fourteen, he already started drinking heavily. On August 7, 1928, nineteen year old Richetti was arrested for robbery in Indiana. He was sentenced for 2 years at the Pendleton state reformatory. Two years later, he did his first bank robbery with Fred Hamner and brothers L.L. and W.A. Smalley in Creek, Oklahoma.
The case of R. V. Askov began in November 1983 when Askov, Hussey, Melo and Gugliotta, were charged with conspiracy to commit extortion against Peter Belmont. On top of Extortion they had multiple existing firearm charges to which they severed 6 months in prison for these offences, and were initially denied bail until May 7th, 1984. After being released, their preliminary hearing for the extortion charge was set in early July 1984. The hearing wasn’t completed until September 1984. The actual trial was then set for the first date available, in October 1985, but in turn got delayed until September 1986 2 years later.

On the afternoon of April 15, 1920, payroll clerk Frederick Parmenter and security guard Alessandro Berardelli were shot to death and robbed of over $15,000 in cash in South Braintree, Massachusetts. After a few weeks, arrests were made and charges were brought against two Italian immigrants by the names of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. A well known attorney, Fred H. Moore, was brought in to defend Sacco and Vanzetti. The accused immigrants had no criminal records, but were known as outspoken anarchists, labor organizers, and antiwar activists. These activities were viewed with great suspicion during this time period.

This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor. He was not convicted for any of his crimes, even the St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929, until he was imprisoned for tax evasion (Horan).
Alphonsus Capone or Scarface was one of the most notorious gangsters of the 1920's and 1930's. He is most well-known for the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Capone started off as bartender in Brooklyn working for Frankie Yale and later became the boss of one of the most successful mobs in Chicago. He headed the organized crime gang called the "Chicago Outfit. " Capone was one of the most successful mobsters; he headed one of the largest organized crime gangs and managed to never get involved in the crime himself.
