The authenticity of these age-old values and customs is also questioned by a few. He then further elaborates on the lack of research that exists to accompany these claims and how his book aims to shed some light upon the said issues to offer an insight into the place of the Hopi customs and traditions as perceived by the Hopi jurists, litigants, lawyers, judges and other personnel involved in Hopi’s conflict resolution
Zitkala-Sa is warned by her friend that the “pale-faces” plan on cutting all of their hair. She is horrified by the idea because to them, “short hair was worn by mourners, and shingled hair by cowards” (437). After finding her hiding under a bed, the pale-faces strap her to a chair and cut her braids off. Long hair to Native Americans symbolizes strength and power and when it is cut, it’s degrading. She was also stripped of her Native clothing and was forced to wear tightly fitted clothes that were uncomfortable.

Horace Miner, a American Anthropologist wrote an academic essay titled “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema.” In this article Miner described some of the bizarre rituals and practices of the “Nacirema” which the reader comes to find out that he is talking about North Americans. The way Miner goes into detail about how these people live makes them seem foreign. His point in doing this is to show the reader how obnoxious anthropologist can be when they are explain a different culture.
Although Native Americans are characterized as both civilized and uncivilized in module one readings, their lifestyles and culture are observed to be civilized more often than not. The separate and distinct duties of men and women (Sigard, 1632) reveal a society that has defined roles and expectations based on gender. There are customs related to courtship (Le Clercq, 1691) that are similar to European cultures. Marriage was a recognized union amongst Native Americans, although not necessarily viewed as a serious, lifelong commitment like the Europeans (Heckewelder, 1819). Related to gender roles in Native American culture, Sigard writes of the Huron people that “Just as the men have their special occupation and understand wherein a man’s duty consists, so also the women and girls keep their place and perform quietly their little tasks and functions of service”.
Many traditional Cherokees believe that after one dies, his or her soul often continues to live on as a ghost (Cherokee Indian Religion). They are supposed to have the ability to materialize where some but not all can see them. More fundamental beliefs that they follow is that good is rewarded, and evil is punished, and witchcraft among the Cherokee does not resemble that of non-Indian cultures (Cherokee Indian Religion). Even though they follow a strict belief system and everything had a purpose and was thought out, there are times when punishments cannot be explained. When someone does something right, it is rewarded either by being ranked higher or having individual honors or privileges within the society.

The boarding schools started a chain reaction of the Native children not learning their own language or traditions, cutting hair, and the gender roles reflecting the Anglo-Americans. These
