The music industry is indubitably one of the largest entertainment industries in world. Global recorded music sales raked in a total of US $15.7 billion in 2016 (International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI), 2016). The music industry “consists of the companies and individuals that make money by creating and selling live music performances, sound recordings and music videos of songs and instrumental pieces” (The Audiopedia, 2016). Over time, the dissemination of music has evolved. In the past, vinyl records and compact discs were a common way to distribute recorded music. However, in the 21st century, things have changed extensively, with the unearthing of music streaming. Music streaming has unquestionably taken root in the music industry in recent times. Although it has produced a new form of piracy, the advantages of music streaming far exceed the disadvantages. Indisputably, music streaming is the future of the music industry. The projected value of the music streaming industry in 2020 is 16.5 billion USD (P. Schoenfeld Asset Management LP (PSAM), 2015) is and that suggests how the music streaming business will only get bigger from here. The music industry has to adapt and adjust to the development of music streaming in order to maximise its potential and yield the most benefits. As Leon C. Music has been apart of the United States culture for some time, while African Americans were enslaved, they used music quite frequently as a means of self- expression. The African music combined with the European music had a major influence on jazz. During the Civil War the troops created music together, this helped them learn how to work together and better understand how to get along, this just goes to show that music is not just a form of entertainment but also a way to bring people together (Carlin 6,9).
There are a number of other music streaming services in the market, the main competitors being Apple Music and Pandora. The first music streaming service I ever used was Apple Music and the selling point for me was the integration of Apple Music with your existing iTunes library, so you see all your music side-by-side. This functionality was error-prone, as it didn’t allow for cross-device syncing, meaning you have to re-download and recreate your created playlists. This became far too frustrating to deal with (amongst other issues) and so I moved to Spotify. The changeover was almost seamless as the basic structure and design of Apple Music and Spotify are very
The entertainment industry encompasses the composition, production, and marketing of music. The music industry has emerged as a dominant business and has maintained popularity by means of adapting alongside social movements, and representing different major classes of society. Music has been used by entertainers as a method of expression, and therefore often sheds light on prominent issues by illustrating relatable stories, or reactions to common problems. For example, The Drums, a modern Indie musical group, has composed the lyrics to the hit song “Money” to include imagery and repetition that work to expose the everyday struggle that impoverished Americans undergo.

Arguments, favors and oppositions Since Napster emerged, music sales in the U.S. have dropped 47 percent(RIAA,n.d.). However, Napster or any other music piracy is not to blame. In fact, music industry in 1980s and 90s was over-inflated(Swanson,2013). Artists receive a percentage of the music sales, and it is mostly between 12 and 14%(if you are a superstar, it can be 20%), after the deductions the retailer, the record company and the songwriter.
Music has been a new way to define communication, and has been reformed through eras of certain musicality. Music has sifted through time continually changing from medieval music, to renaissance, to a current era of multiple genres of music. Influential moments has been captured through music, and it quickly revolutionized music as a source to capture events, big or small, as a platform to inform society. This era of multiple genres spans the beginning of the 1990’s where hip hop surfaced and is still continuing to redefine the movement of music through many hip hop artists. This creates different purposes for music and how it affects society through the storytelling of music.

Hip-hop music has changed the world over the years and has influences in all aspects of modern culture including film, fashion, and sports. Rap/Hip-hop is one of the most popular music genres of our time, dating back to the 1960s. In fact, studies show that hip-hop music had more influence on pop music from the 1960s all the way to 2010. Nowadays, record labels and artists cannot persuade listeners to ‘buy’ their music. It is believed that the aspect of music has changed due to the popularity of music streaming. Allen (2013) agreed by stating that music streaming has changed the view of people in the industry of music. For example, popular music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora and a number of new music streaming applications provide the easiest way for listeners to enjoy music freely without having to do illegal downloading or buying a CD. Likewise, Listeners have the ability to choose the music they want to listen.
In music, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Buddy Holly and Marvin Gaye were the most prolific people on the world stage. Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe ruled the cinematic stage. However, the major highlight of this era was the dawn of technologies involvement in our life. Radio, television and all electronics in general no longer became wants but needs. Once somebody owned one they were aware of everything happening around them, knew what’s hot and what’s not and could be easily persuaded to buy the newest vacuum cleaner model or dress from the shops.

Promotions can bring a more varied audience to a musician and can help bands gain popularity. By having more people listening to an artist’s music, a musician can be given a sense of reassurance to write more songs. Recently people are debating about whether advertisers should be allowed to use a musicians’ music.
